best s/w for remote PC control

Here is my idea.

I have a media centre set up in one room running amongst other things Foobar and iTunes (plus home theatre duties).

I Plan to run an optical cable through the wall and into another room where I will connect to some AVI 9.1 seakers and use this room for audio use. So all I need to do is to control the media centre from the other room via an old laptop.

Any suggestions as to a good software package that will do this. I only need one master and one slave not multiple licenses. There are a few I have found on Google but as always, user endorsement is a good thing.

Why not use the Remote Desktop Connection of Windows itself? Works fine for me, from XP Pro

to W7 Ultimate. I do not know which Windows versions have it though.
