I have a wall opposite my bed which has about 160-170cm width before the door gets in the way, in this space i want some sort of bench/rack for hifi and possibly a tv as well later on.

Should I go for something like this:

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/40105340

which would take up most of the room and I could put the speakers on top of it too.

Or would I be better off with a smaller rack like:

http://www.richersounds.com/product/racks/ttap/avsc303800rc/ttap-avsc303800rc

and seperate speaker stands?

I'm not so sure as the professor. That rack from Richer Sounds looks very tinny, where as the wood in the ikea bench looks similar to the lacks table, legendary in hifi support. If you put speakers on the kind of isolation support cones that you can get from ebay for £20ish I suspect it would work ver well. I would base my decision on what looks good and also, when you sit to listen to music, which one results in the speaker being better positioned height wise. You want the tweeter to be roughly where your eyes are.

That's mainly where I was coming from. Given the Ikea table is 35cm tall, unless you like to lay down on the floor when listening to music, the speakers are going to be too low. They'd also be better supported on proper stands.
