PS AUDIO PerfectWave DAC Black (£2999) £1699 is on sale here. Ex-dem means ex-demonstration ie used only by the dealer and still under guarantee. There is an add-on called the bridge for connection to a uPnP device.

Once more, thank you for all the input. If I'm turning into a bug, please ignore me.

I did more readings about the DACs mentioned by you. I see me going around QB-9 despite the USB limitation (unless USB disappears in next years, this is not a problem for me). I plan to keep it, if it is as good as people say. I love good sound but I have to get real...can't keep changing gear every 2 or 3 years). Best price in Portugal is ? 2800.

Of course, I canït keep my eyes away from Weiss web page and other web pages with reviews. The best price I find around here, for weiss Dac 202 is ? 5499 (marson-audio.com).

I guess we all can go crazy once in our life eheheh

Back to reality.

My big question is the one I had when I started this post.

Is weiss 202 a good mach for my actual gear (Primare i32 + ProAc) or a Dac like Qb-9 or W4S Dac2 would be a more reasonable choice? (I won't change Primare or ProAc that soon). My big problem is my lack of knowledge about the right balance among all this. I want to get the best my amp+speakers can give me but I keep thinking that the people who buy Weiss 202 already own amps and Speakers that cost many, many thousands ?.

I made some extra reading about PC sound UBS vs Firewire (but, as in many other areas, everybody have an opinion. I think they both are good).

"Ex-dem means ex-demonstration ie used only by the dealer and still under guarantee." thanks for explanation. I thought it was something like that but wasn't sure. They do same same here. I bought my ProAc for 1000 ? in a Audio Store (ex-demo) when they cost 2100 ? new.

About the PS AUDIO PerfectWave DAC. it looks great but there's something about the way it works...I'm not ready for kind of thing yet.

I keep thanking you all and a special thanks to peteAllen

Enjoy your life!

I'm sure you'll be happy whatever you choose. The Weiss DAC202 is really an amazing dac, I have heard it, it has an especially great midrange, high resolution, a lot of presence, warmth and deep, deep soundstage. In the system I heard it, it sounded better than my Berkeley dac. There's a good review on computeraudiophile.com. It also has an extremely good headphone amp apparently.

If you search on ebay for "weiss dac" you will find one going cheaper, as well as the older Minerva (about the same a the dac2 apparently but will more features).

Good luck!

I'm looking for a good DAC aswell at the moment and have auditioned a lot of different stuff: DACMAGIC, rDAC, Rega, Music Hall Dac but two Dacs are above everything i tested :
Audionemesis (italian, no usb dac)
Casea Cepheus (czech republik with usb)

Try if You can get a hand on those... btw. they're cheap!!!

Hi dio

Thank you for your sugestions.

Not easy to find decent information, in English, about "Casea Capheus". Anyway, I did some reading and both, Casea Capheus and Audionemesis, are not what I'm looking for.

Once again, thank you. It's always nice to know about new products.

be happy

Hi Sharetor

Another little bonus that I find myself using quite alot recently with the W4S DAC-2 when just wishing to listen to casual background music (Is to set the Wyred 4 Sound Dac2 to HT Bypass output - This feature is not available on most dacs)..Is the QED Uplay AD2P bluetooth receiver (circa £60), I just plug this straight into the HT Bypass RCA's input - So I can now send music (upto 48khz) directly from either my laptop or my ipod touch wirelessly to my audio set up...But do make sure the ipod and the laptop volume levels are set to low as they are the only way of controlling the volume...You don't wish to blow your speakers up!

Note. I did try a APT-X transmitter ( Jaybird - iSport ) on the ipod touch and was not all that impressed with the SQ...In fact it was faulty and I returned it to the seller.

Hi Dio,

I too am looking for a DAC at the lower end of the spectrum and have a shortlist with a few of the ones you have tested - DacMagic, rDAC and the Rega (the last one being the beresford Caiman). I wanted to know out of those 3 that you have tested and that I am looking at which one did you think was the best? What were their plus points and negatives if any? It's just so I may get an idea of what sound they provide to help myself match it to my system better (Monitor Audio BX2's, Marantz PM6003, cables- QED Silver anniversary). Any information you have would be great, thanks.

Just to throw another option in, recently released is the M2Tech Young Dac, RRP is 1,100 EURO but you can pick one up for £800 delivered. I've just upgraded to this and it really is a super bit of kit, i'm surprised there hasn't been more notice taken of it. For a lot of people on other sites it's matching or beating the quality of dacs 3 or 4 times the price, and haven't seen a bad review....yet

... Good design with asynchronous USB capability up to 32 bit 384khz and all the other usual connection options. It's certainly opened up my collection, listening again to everything, didn't know what i was missing! I really think i would have to spend many times more for an improvement to this part of my set up now. Gone is my Hi-Face and digital coaxial...and needless to say my old rdac will be up for grabs as well

Hi

When I order my Primare I saw that "Optional Media i/o module (in development)". I wish they make something as good as middle/high quality DAC.

I will keep waiting a few more months to decide if I go for a good DAC or to Primare optional Media i/o module. Let's wait and see how good it is and how high is the price.

Enjoy life
