I've some old KEF Concerto's that finally need replacing (used with Rotel RA04 and Marantz CD6002). When I listened to some options in the £440 - £600 range (KEK IQ5, Focal Chorus 714) suggested by my local Audio T store I thought that they were lacking the bass that I was used to with the KEFs. I would like to stay in that price range but would be willing to go up to £800 or £900 if I could find a pair to match the Concerto' bass response.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Monitor Audio RS8.

I picked up a mint pair recently, only a few months old, for less than £500.

If you want new, my choice would probably be the MA RS8's. However, I managed to get a secondhand pair of Proac Studio 140's for £800 and they as you might expect are in a different league.

If you Google 'For Sale : ProAc Studio 140 + Centre', you'll see the sort of bargain you may be able to get if you're lucky! Unfortunately I missed that one!

B&W 683s or MA RS8s should fit the bill around your price bracket. My RS8s have brilliant bass but can sound a touch harsh at loud volumes with my cyrus gear. I think though they may match your system well, well worth a listen. Thinking of possibly of selling mine looking for a speaker that matches better my cyrus with the same amount of bass but a bit smoother. A post coming up soon I think!

Having owned them and loved them both (and having used the Rotel RA04 amp too) I'd be going for the M/A RS6,s B&W 685's or the B&W 684's.

Believe it or not both the M/A RS6's and the B&W 684's sound better than their 'bigger brothers' so to speak.

Don't get me wrong; the RS8's and the 683's sound great but the RS6's and the 684's just have that better clarity and smoother, more detailed midrange as well as superb bass.

The B&W 685's would also suit your system very well and IMO, would be the best option.

The Rotel RA04 amp isn't the most powerful but it'd drive the 685's really well and would sound superb. Better as well if partnered with Partington Super Dreadnought stands and Chord Carnival Silverscreen speaker cable and Chord Crimson interconnects.

Both the M/A RS6's and the B&W 684's need good apmlification; not saying that the Rotel wouldn't offer this but both the speakers sound at their best when partnered with a powerful amp (min 70w per channel) or more so when bi-amped.

dynaudio are usually not shy in the bass.

also, unlike some of their others, the excite range are supposed to be a fairly easy amp load.
