Bedroom audio setup: A pair of active speakers or 2 bookshelf speakers and a small amp?

Check out the 'monitors' section and read about some well known and affordable products from the likes of Yamaha, Tannoy, Equator, Adam etc, etc.

This will give you a bit of insight in the kind of things that get talked about on this forum. For a lot of people who really want to play good quality music from their computers a pair of these speakers give you everything you need, you may need to upgrade your soundcard but that is not expensive.
