Me...I hate everything. As was once pointed out to me by a 6th former while I was working in education....Ray, in my years at this college I have noticed that you treat everyone the same, no favourites. Yes, you treat everone with equal contempt.

That was a proud day and one that I will remember.........

i certainly can say the beatles were rubbish, thanks very much. And the reason i can say it is because in my opinion they were. Theres no need for anyone to be so thin skinned as to take offence.

The reason they were rubbish is they took inspiration from music with sex appeal and soul and edge, then they remade that music (often literally) with those elements methodically removed, and replaced with twee british politeness. if their music were food, it would be a soggy cucumber sandwhich...

...with the crusts removed...

And in case anyone is still in any doubt (tho i believe my thesis is watertight):

"Number 9...burp...Number 9...fart...Number 9...Cup of earl grey anyone...Number 9...How terribly avant garde and progressive...number 9...Yes, we're making rapid progress up our own fundaments...

Ahem. Ive just discovered they actually make me quite angry.

I think we have a new definition of the word minority here.

And whats your point...?

Anyhoo, id rather be in the minority of folks who have listened to a lot of their stuff and realised its pap, than the majority who say "Whats that? Beatles? Oh yeah, legends, innit? I mean, never really 'eard 'em much meself like but, yeah, if it werent for them...".

So you don't like The Beatles then?

That's ok, I'm not offended.

Of course it's ok that you don't like them or their music but it's ludicrous to suggest "they were rubbish". They were musical pioneers. They took inspiration from those before them just like every other musician but tell me who they stole Tomorrow Never Knows, Strawberry Fields Forever, Rain, Ticket To Ride, A Day In The Life, I Am The Walrus, Taxman or Penny Lane from.

The Beatles were not rubbish; you just don't like them.

So if you clutter your songs with lots of swear words it makes them really edgy, wow thats really cool..........

I have to admit I much preferred The Rolling Stones and The Who, but then I guess the loveable moptops were really rather frightfully northern, while the Stones an' the 'Oo are Laaarnd'n boys, innay?

chebby:

Pink floyd - mostly - appeal to men of a certain age who spent a lot of time in student digs getting wrecked with other ernest young blokes with long greasy hair and ex-army greatcoats, muttering 'far-out' whilst listening to introspective, depressing, overblown 'prog rock' and convincing themselves they were very clever for doing so. Thank goodness punk, new-wave, two-tone, disco, soul, Ska and Reggae blasted those depressing old f**ts into the ether in their cosmic teapots.

The rest of us would shower, put on our smart togs and go and dance all night - with girls - to music that had not lost that vital element of all such music. Sex.

Sorry, but Yes, Genesis, PF and other such tripe where a 40 minute 'track' needed vast inflatable objects, crashing aircraft and billion dollar light shows to keep people awake, were not descended from rock & roll but came from Music Hall and the circus and 'end-of-the-pier' high camp.

Rock & Roll was supposed to shock the parents & teachers and be about youthful rebellion and sex. It's roots came from the 'wrong side of the tracks' and the seedier/seemier elements of American popular music and Jazz (usually brothels or 'cathouses' if you go back far enough). English prog rock was rooted in the single gender Public schools and Universities and Art schools that a lot of it's performers emanated from.

hilarious. and reading your other post chebby. i think im about 6-7-8 years younger than you but trod the same music path.

I will now 'Out' myself. I too cannot (not through want of trying) get into the beatles. and pink floyd for that matter. i was hoping that when i got my new system that you guys helped me to choose. that i would hear what is so marvelous about Pink Floyd and to a lesser extent (yes, lesser lol) The Beatles. But ive given it a go. at best it bores me. at worst its just loud noise.

Chebbys generalisation of a Floyd fan and that ilk was funny and like many steretypes not without a bit of truth. My brother (only 2 years older than me) got a place at a public school. you would have thought he was 10 -15 years older going by the stuff he and his peers were into. whilst i was trying soul/funk/reggae/ska. they were listening to bowie.beatles.floyd ELP. im afraid the stereotype rings true for me.

oh. I cant stand the WHO either. just noise again to me.

Sorry...er...what?

Do you surmise from my last but one post that i consider the Anti Nowhere League's So What to be an unparalelled work of genius?

it really is weird to say i cant say theyre rubbish. I dont like them, at all, and im judging on whether i like the music they made. I do not. i think it sounds rubbish*. Thats my opinion. And its an informed one.

Sorry, what criteria should i judge on, the size of their beards...? Am i not allowed to call anyone who has made original music rubbish?

*When they play it. Some bands have made a decent fist of covering them tho.

And as for that boring Gilmour bloke on Sky Arts just now (i just got HD today, dontcha know)...

I shall now run away.

You can say what you like and think what you like but it would be wrong to say that "The Beatles were rubbish" because that sweeping generalisation would imply you're speaking on behalf of the whole world and what you say is fact.

You don't like them? Well that's a completely different but perfectly valid statement.

No, please don't run away.

Hi Fenton.

you said this '' because that sweeping generalisation would imply you're speaking on behalf of the whole world and what you say is fact.''

you also said this '' they were musical pioneers''

I'm not picking on you just your posts as an example of how strange people behave on internet forums. you believe that YOU can make that statement but that HE cannot make his. it reminds me of gangsta rappers having an indignant spat " dont call me a ***, ***!"

Hello Mr Man,

I was commenting on al7478's comment that "I certainly can say The Beatles were rubbish".

When I said that "The Beatles were not rubbish" I was not making a similar generalisation. I should have elaborated and said that no band or artist is rubbish. It is entirely subjective. I nor anyone else can claim they were great or rubbish.

When I said they were musical pioneers, I think it's fair to say that was a fact. They can be bl**dy awful (to a particular listener) and still offer the world ground breaking songs, ideas and recording techniques. There are lots of artists I truly despise but I can still respect their musical and historical influence.

HE can tell us of whatever opinion he has and I respect him for it.

Music is art. There is no good or bad art.

Because by me saying "The Beatles were not rubbish", it doesn't mean I actually said that "The Beatles were great". Just because I said one thing, it doesn't mean I meant something else. The phrase you quoted me on was statement of fact.

method man:Why is HIS a generalisation but YOURS not?

"I certainly can say The Beatles were rubbish" - His statement was obviously a generalisation. He didn't say "I think The Beatles were rubbish"

"The Beatles were not rubbish" - I did not mean this as a generalisation. I meant, "The Beatles were not rubbish/brilliant/awful/the best band ever/the worst band ever"

Having listened to both Rubber Soul and Revolver last night, the Stereo remastering has been done very very well and most of the tracks really sound good.

I was however disappointed with "Tomorrow never knows" as the mixing of Ringo's drums and tambourine does start to grate on the ear somewhat.

I would heartily recommend that any Beedles fans out there check the remasters out, maybe buy individual albums rather than the box set if you don't want to part with £160ish initially

p.s before anyone says "they aren't out until tomorrow"- yes that's very true but when your bestist friend owns a record shop you can always "borrow" one
