So, in the January test, the S300 really appears to have lost out to the PS3 just because of price. Considering you can get the S300 for less than the PS3 right now, which do people think I should go for if I do go with blu-ray? Gaming not being a consideration at all here by the way.

Hi Jody,

The S500 didn't just lose out on price, but on functionality - for example, the lack of an ethernet port (and therefore upgradeability) is crucial for a format such as Blu-ray that's still evolving. And it still doesn't support all the HD audio formats via HDMI - just not on for a dedicated player.

If you're not interested in the gaming, internet and other capabilities of the PlayStation 3, i'd hold fire on Blu-ray for now - we saw many new budget-but-full-spec players announced at CES last week, and now HD DVD seems doomed, i predict many other manufacturers jumping on the Blu-ray wagon and increasing choice and quality.

Ok, I think I'll hold off then, as it's certainly not a "must have now" kind of thing.

I will point out that the S300 and S500 can be upgraded though. They may not have an ethernet port, but you can download new firmware (which sony have been releasing) from the sony support site on a computer, burn it out to a disc, and then the player can upgrade from that.

And in the mean time I think I might just pop down to Richer Sounds and try and get a demo comparison between the 540D V2, the DVD-1940 and the DV6001. I'll admit that, knowing that all three are good, but that the Denon is 80 quid cheaper than both the other two, i'm probably a bit advance-biased, but I want to give them all a shot :)
