The DS-001, a compact, highly adaptable, 200W cutting edge, audiophile Class D, power amplifier with world beating audio performance

Your opinions?

"World beating" sounds like you're taking snippets from the press brochure 🙂

I happen to like Class D amplification. I'm not saying it leaves Class A/B standing as you have to take every comparison on an individual basis, but it does have benefits. For their size, the DS001's are cracking little amps, and ideal for those that need something pretty discreet. Of course, for those that aren't after the discreet aspect, they do have competition at around £1200 per pair.

For home cinema users, they can be mounted on their sides in a purpose built 'rack' and placed on an equipment stand shelf. Five wide takes up about the same amount of space as a normal multi-channel power amplifier, so there's no space saving aspect for home theatre users, but they can be added to move from five channels to seven, or to nine.

They should work fine with them, as I tend to find Class D amplification has a bit more grip and control over speakers. If their power rating is true, then they should have no problem driving them, even to high levels.

Hi Krolikgena,

Surely you've been on this forum long enough to realise that ATC's work wonderfully well with every sort and combination of equipment ever made, in every shape and size of room, and with every type of music ?? (Just don't spend too much on cables !) 😉

Hi E B

Within the last year it looks like ATC's are now not the only ones :shhh: (particularly where amplification is concerned) as now almost all if not all amplifiers ever produced (and most if not all new amplifiers in the years ahead) are now/will be at a minimum of being 'fine'. With the latter there seems like no limit what is spent on speaker cables either

Anyway, something else for you to quote elsewhere 🙂

All the best

Hi krolikgena

Power wise the DS-001 should have more then enough quality of power and i would say that the DS-001 has also got enough quantity of power (for many rooms) to be paired with ATC's SCM19 monitors. SCM19 monitors have a benign load that does not go below 5.5 ohms. Anyway if possible try and listen to this combination to see if the reproduction suits you.

Btw, if possible try and also see SCM19's mid/bass drive units in the flesh (away from the cabinets). Worth the time and effort as you get to see ATC's massively engineered and built SLMT drive unit. Real beauty lies within 🙂 You can read more about SLMT here http://www.atcloudspeakers.co.uk/downloads/CompanyProfile.pdf

Fwiw, i feel that SCM19 monitors are probably the VFM passive bookshelf designs currently available on the market regardless of price.

All the best

One thing I didn't mention, is that whether you actually like this particular combination is a matter of taste. As the DS001's are quite neutral with no real characteristics of their own (a little like Bryston), you may feel them a little too neutral to pair with the SCM19's. I find ATC's own amplification a little on the smooth side, which I'm assuming is a tone that ATC have chosen to perfectly partner their speakers. The DS001's you might find the opposite. It is something only you can decide with a demo 🙂

just want to update,
Now i have a pair of PMC TB2S-AII which are a passive monitors with attached to the back ds-001 mono amps. and they sound simply sublime 🙂
connected to the my new Benchmark Dac2 they provide a kind of total transparency and precision that i was looking for. a sense of not listening to just a good loudspeakers, but a huge soundfield coming at me.. that never happened at many hi-fi auditions that i've been to.
and this flat responce is so addictive... want to hear music more and more!

yes, i've had a dac1 hdr before and replaced it with the dac2. it's really hard to say regarding sound quality as i didn't have them side by side.. overall i feel it's even more transparent and revealing than the hdr
