Wiim Amp Ultra or Eversolo Play

We called into the Hi-Fi dealer in Wroclaw called Audio Plaza and a very nice chap helped us, fortunately he spoke English, which helped me.

They stock both Wiim and Dali kit, which is why we went there. They had the Wiim Amp Ultra, but didn’t have the Dali Sonik 1. (The Sonik 1 was in stock, but at their Poznan branch).

For information, the Sonik 1 is the new replacement for the Oberon 1.

However, we had a demo of the Wiim Amp Ultra with a pair of Dali Oberon 1s to get a flavour of the kit and I played some tracks from my Qobuz Playlist to hear what the combo sounded like.

For a small streamer / amp and speakers it sounded quite good and we didn’t need to get the volume up past 50% to fill their demo room. I’ll be using it in a near field position so it should easily sound loud enough for what I want. The frequency range for the Oberon 1 and the Sonik 1 is 51 - 26,000 hz, and the bass wasn’t lacking at all which was good.

When we have moved into our new developer house, I will place an order for the Wiim Amp Ultra and the Dali Sonik 1 with Audio Plaza. Nice to help the local dealers.

Oh excellent, I hope you're settling well.
Dali make mighty fine speakers. I have the Oberon 3's setup in my bedroom.

It always put a smile on my face, when I play them, I also have external ribbon tweeters tied to each speaker, this enhanced the top end further.

I suspect the Sonik series will be even better.
Enjoy!

Thanks for this. You’re the second person that has said that Dali speakers are good.

After yesterday, this has confirmed the direction we are going in.

Which ones are they Jason? - and what is their bottom to top frequency range?
Hi Gray

Below are some stock photos from AliExpress. Tweeters are 6ohms - technical specs as follows:
I think I've set mine to 10K. I know I can hear that (13K+), I've done the tests 🙂

I know I know speaker cable wrong direction (doesn't really make a difference) 🙂 Note: Banana plugs to the external ribbon tweeter and spades to the main speaker. The tweeters are passive. This is an older model, you can only select via knob 10, 15, 20K

Am I right in thinking that means you have two tweeters (per speaker) working as there is no crossover?
Yes per speaker, no crossover🙂
Extends the high frequencies and working in tandem with Dali tweeters.

Same arguments with do I need a subwoofer?
These external tweeters add a little bit of extra sparkle, really compliments the already very good Dali Oberon 3s.

Ps.
You need a cable with banana connection one end (external tweeter) and spade on the other (main speaker terminal).
If your speaker terminal can't accommodate using both banana and spade on same terminal, then it won't work.

Pss
Well actually, it must have some type of crossover or filter inside the ribbon tweeters to allow you to select the highest frequencies 10, 15 and 20K.

Can't beat a bit of sparkle 👍
Assuming your Dali are around 6 ohm, then the parallel connection means your amp is seeing around 3 ohm (before any dips).
Obviously no issues caused for you.

The high impedance of the piezo types I experimented with, means they can be parallel connected with little effect on overall impedance.
Their only disadvantages are that they're cheap, nasty and sound like ****.
80% colouration, good only for mobile discos, with listeners too pissed to care 😆

Those tweeter horns look scary Gray!

Imagine have those at back of your sofa, watching a scene from the movie Jigsaw, and that grisly sound after decapitation , Waaaaahhhh.......both the cats and I will be stuck to the ceiling!

Yes, the Oberon 3's are 6 ohms, perfectly matched.
It's a good point you made about the drop in the Ohms, not thought about that but it seems, no problem for the Atoll amp driving them.🙂
