For the best 50 inch displays, keeping the Pioneer 1080p screens out of the equation, are the next best the Pioneer PDP-5080XD & PDP-508XD or do the full HD Panasonics and Samsungs surpass them?

Well, they were better than last year's Full HD Panasonics and Samsungs but both those companies are launching new models this year whereas Pioneer aren't launching anymore HD Ready models. The 508XD is still considered one of the best sets out there and is only outperformed, currently, by the Full HD Pioneers. However this may change with the release of the new Panasonic 50" Full HD sets. They won't be as good as the Pioneer with Standard Definition but are sure to be very good with HD.

If you look at the test done on this by HDTVTEST (Google it) you'll note that he says the black levels are better and that any of the probs with shadow detail have been sorted compared to the 428xd. Now this was written a while ago but for around 1600 quid I doubt you'll find a better 50'' tv IMHO

Wish I had the room for one !

Thanks for the confirmation. Reading various reviews, it did come across that the HD ready Pioneers were much better then their full HD rivals.

I'll be waiting with interest to see how the new Panasonics fare against the Pioneers before I finally part with my hard earns.

Rexman I see your logic... Pioneers that are so good that their 720p sets are still better than other companies 1080p models. However I must tell you that in my experience, picture "quality" is something that depends on an individual's personal taste and preferences. Both the Pioneer range and both the new and old Panasonic ranges have their own merits, I believe. And which one is best (for you) is something nobody else but you can tell you. So you must see for yourself.
