Basically i just want a really cheap DAC to be able to plug my Panasonic plasma into my stereo for the odd movie...

Before anyone gets snotty lol I have a baby boy who is no.1 priority for my money and it's only TV... If it related to music I would be more fussy.

Hey Paul...I hear you about kids taking over all the $$$ in the house🙂

I would say you don't really need a DAC perse for what you're looking to do. Assuming your plasma TV has some audio out options? And then it depends what the audio in on your stereo is. Do you have a separate comonent setup? If you have an amp w/ optical in that's ideal...but not necessary. Or are you looking to "upsample" the audio out of your TV...in which case, yes you would need a DAC.

Do you have a set top box from your cable company? Most of the newer ones have optical out....

A lot of modern TVs don't have an analogue-out other than maybe a headphone socket. My dad has a recent 50" Panasonic and had exactly the same problem. Bought him an el-cheapo optical DAC off the Bay of E and while it worked, the volume was incredibly low and couldn't be adjusted anywhere (I posted a thread on here about it last year). Eventually the problem was solved when he bought an MCR610 and connected the TV directly to that.
