for now i would just but a good s/hand one off ebay for say £50 with digtal out and let your yamaha do the dac work. then save the rest and add to try and get a dac-magic or something simliar you will find the things the dac can do far more useful for the future than just a cd player.

cheers , im going to let the bluray player do the cd playing for a while at least , ill probably benefit more from a centre speaker and sats , they are next on the hitlist , i will look into a dac though , i admit im pretty clueless about them ..

i have a creative mp3 player with about 200 tunes on , i wonder if there is something i can buy to be able to use that through the amp ?

JohnDuncan:Buy this now before they run out! Don't even think about it!

I tried to buy the one they had left in the Glasgow store. The ex display/open box one advertised on the web site was nowhere to be found. They did have a repair one though! I had a wasted trip because the website was wrong and was very narked. A letter has been sent away - yes a letter because there was no direct e-mail facility.

Annoyed and disappointed.

To be fair they do advise double checking stock information by making a phone call before you visit.

I appreciate that MP but two weeks later and they are still advertising that they have one when they don't.

maxflinn:hi folks , im looking to get one , is that budget high enough to gain benefits ?, ive got a pair of ma br5s and a yamaha rxv765 , im not currently thinking about a stereo music amp , the yam will have to do that job for the forseeable future , but i would like a proper cd player rather than using my sony bds363 .. any thoughts ? ta..

Not read all of the thread so far, so apologies if you're on the road to buying or have bought. Depending on where you live in the UK, assuming you are in the UK(!), if you're looking to buy new, then there's any number of usual suspects (although the Cambridge 640 Mk 2 CDP would be a good one at £150 if you can land one) but Gumtree often turns up some great kit in fine condition for throwaway money.

£200 will get you the Exposure CD player from the 1990s (don't think it had a model number at the time!) - this originally went for £1500 or so. Chances are it'll be in good nick and you'll have landed a winner. Partner carefully as I hear it has a leaner sound but excels in the midrange.

Often models like the Rotel 965BX (very well regarded and reviewed) CDP will turn up for less than £70. Venerable elder statesmen like the Marantz CD52 Mk II will go for £20-30 and for that money, they're a bargain. Happy memories of the latter model which I had on the back of the WHF review of the day and a demo at Superfi. Great player and won't be too shabby now. Get one and even if the transport fails in a year, you spent what, a couple of rounds of drinks to get it?

The caveat is, you need to be happy with a used bit of kit - the seller's "this is one of the greatest CD players ever made" counts for nothing. Likewise, there's no comeback if you buy a pup, so check carefully. Well, the small claims court for significant sums, but most will put a bad experience down to just that. On the other hand, you'll be in the seller's home, can see the state of the place and maybe get an idea if he's being upfront about it. Try and listen to the thing if you can, or at least switch it on and press a few buttons. "Power", "Open/Close" and "Play" would be my options!

And, if you have bought something by now, hope you enjoy it, sorry for the ramble!

hi the rs , thanks for the info , i have decided to wait a while , i need other bits and bobs first , sub , sats , centre etc , but ill defo come back to this thread and take your views on board when i have the dough , using a bluray player for my music until then , probably not acceptable to the trained ear , but still sounds great to me , those br5s are my first proper speakers , i think ive died and gone to heaven

the record spot:...you'll be in the seller's home, can see the state of the place and maybe get an idea if he's being upfront about it.

Bought an immaculate pair of Mordaunt Shorts once (some 20 years ago) from a guy in a flat in Winchester who appeared to live like an indoor tramp with the exception of his kitchen and hifi! (And a room that appeared to have 20,000 short wave radios in it!)

He was gruff and monosyllabic (although he did make a nice cup of tea). After I paid and left the flat with the box, we could see him watching us from the window with binoculars all the way to the car and continued watching until we left!

The speakers were superb though and looked like they had left the factory the day before.

I was glad it was a cash transaction and he did not have our address though. Very creepy.

Indeed, Although he was more like a scruffy version of Geoffrey Palmer in 'Fairly Secret Army'. (And the chairs were deck chairs.)
