The MiniDSP UMIK is only $75 + Delivery from Hong Kong. it worked out at £100 inc Import duty/VAT etc.

Its similar to a Behringer one IIRC, and there are europen dealers for the MinIDSP stuff.

The good thing about it is that its plug and play, USB cable straight into laptop, download the REW software (Free) and away you go.

I have started another thread on the REW software. Hope u can join in hoops! Ordered from France at 90euros. Can I connect the dsp mic' to the laptop and hdmi to my receiver? I will confine my further questions to my other thread so that the continuing saga of 'hoops-diy-hifi-on-toast-experiments in sound' can continue uninterupted. :)

Bit of a festive update:

I had an idea to use the Sony TA-F770ES as a pre/power using its Adapter Out/In loop to use the MiniDSP in between, but alas it did not work, so that was here for about a week while I was experimenting.

There was also the arrival of a Toshiba SD-9500E which had been on my long term to try list, a battleship DVD player with two digital inputs which I can run the PS3 through. Its Staying for the moment but the mighty S9000ES might be slotted back in the new year, not sure yet.

With the need for a replacement pre amplifier I picked up a little Audionote M-Zero-R Pre amp, and a nice little thing it is too:

This means I can get the ribbons up and running as well, so we are a proper 3-way with active on the Bass/Mid and passive on the Ribbons crossover @5.5kHz

On top of that I have been thinking long term about the speakers, the short of it I dont actually like the 'tweakability' of the MiniDSP, I was forever changing little bits and not really listening to the music, so having a think about it over the festive period.

I found some Rega Alya speakers cheap locally, they needed a new bass driver on one of them, which was dispatched nice and quick from Frank Harvey (Thanks Kev!).

Little and Large:

And the horns packed away for the christmas break:

So not sure what the new year will bring, I do like the simplicity of the Alyas over the Active Horns, and they seem to go well with the Decware I have to say.

Well.....

Was offered some nice, big, old and efficient speakers which I picked up at the weekend, an interesting complement to the Alyas and Kolts:

Some late '60s Goodmans Axiom 201 drivers. They are 12", wide range up to around 10kHz (probably, at a push) and came with a ~80Litre ported cabinet, which is quite well made considering th age.

They integrate really well into the room, and have a really nice unforced presentation but still retain good dynamics and bass punch. Not the deepest bass, as you would expect from the age and high efficiency (~96dB/15Ohms).

I have re-used the ribbon tweeters running from around 7.5kHz and up to help with the treble, really does help a lot and sounds quite good even with just a quick play!

Found a Croft Micro 25 Basic going cheap, which will replace the AN Zero Pre, as well as doing the MM input from the Gyro.

For someone who I suspect is relatively young you have both excellent taste in kit and the kit to match. Lovely.

Thanks, yes I do like to think I have refined tast for someone in their mid-late twenties

My car history is just as 'eclectic', my current hack is a Metro circa 1996, other than that they have all been Triumphs between 1979 and 1983 :silenced:

Hmmm, all change  These may look familiar from page 1  They are the same pair of ATC SCM10s

Managed to keep in touch with the person who bought them off me, and have been umming and arring over the past 6 months or so if I should buy them back as he had them sat unused. 6 hours in the car later and they were mine, once again!

They will be joined by a Rega Apollo-R and Brio-R combo to try, hopefully the start of a smart, super simple (and easy to use) system 8)

And a little room treatment. How is that working out?

It works well, I had these in the corners before but tried them first with the Kolts in this position and it works really well, seems to help a lot with the soundstage and bass depth especially.

Acoustic treatment behind speakers is a great idea, and as you say it can clean things up significantly. I have a GIK panel hanging behind each speaker. Which reminds me, I must get some photos up soon.

Yes, seen a few on the Wam and PFM.

Matched to the colour of your walls (white in my case), they're pretty unobtrusive. I now have three panels behind the listening position, which have helped to clarify the top end.

The Brio-R/Apollo-R combo.

Well to go with the ATCs, I went for a package deal from of another forum member for the Brio-R/Apollo-R he was selling to try as a stop gap.
I really did not get on with the Apollo-R, just sounded bright/splashy in the treble and boomy/odd in the bass. Not heard so much of a change between CDPs before and it only lasted a weekend. I much preferred the Sony, much smoother all round.
The Brio-R did better than I expected though, sounded good but not brilliant. Bit rough round the edges but a lot more drive/balls than the Brio3 I had when I owned the SCM10s previously.

I can see where the Rega electronics get their lively/get-up-and-go sound from but I find it a little tiresome, I much prefer their speakers based on my experiences (R1, R3, R7, Alya and Jura)

The replacement for the Brio-R, a little Bryston B60. Sounding very good, really like it!

Sounds a lot better IMO and that's just on one evenings listening. Initially I thought it sounded a bit loose/soft in the bass until I went out the room and realised how loud I was listening, much higher than I usually did but it just sounded so un-strained in the mid-treble, its just the bass dynamics with the little 80dB SCM10s and 60wpc B60 has its obvious limits. As mentioned though, its louder than I would usually listen I just did not realise how loud it was!

At more normal volumes it sounds great, bass is great, tight and punchy with good depth, not the lowest but then that's the limitation of the ATCs again. There was no hint of grain/harshness in the treble I have had from the Brio-R and other SS amps, the B60 really is a gem of an amp if you dont NEED massive power. Runs quite cool as well which is nice, even after the hammering with some John Grant or Orbital at high volumes it was barely warm to the touch!

Pretty impressed I have to say! Seems to go well with the Sony as well!
