Question Amplifier update for my turntable

EDIT: I’m sorry, this should be in the turntable section

I’m pretty new to vinyl and bought me an AT-LPW40WN a couple of months ago. I’m using the build in pre amp on the turntable together with my old Marantz SR5003 receiver (which has no phono pre-amp) and two B&W DM602 speakers.

Sometimes I plug my Beyerdynamic headphones straight into the turntable. I always have the impression the sound is better with my headphones plugged straight into the turntable, even if I compare by plugging the same headphones into my SR5003 receiver.

I was thinking about buying an amplifier to replace the receiver. I really like Marantz and was looking into the PM6007. The idea is that a decent amplifier should do a great/better job than a av receiver if you just want to play some vinyl. With the PM6007 I could also use the Marantz pre-amp instead of the turntable build in pre-amp. Do you guys think the PM6007 would be an improvement compared with the SR5003 or not?

I reckon you would find that it is - though possibly not as much of an improvement as you might be expecting.
A few of us have been more than happy with the phono stages built into Marantz amps and you would have the option to compare with the one in the AT.

If you could arrange to get a 6007 on home loan, you'd be able to answer your question better than anyone here could.

Thanks for your reply.

The main reason I’m asking is because I was recommended to look at a dedicated amplifier instead of an av receiver if the only goal is listening to vinyl.

I had a feeling the line output may have been feeding the headphones directly.
But how you found that to sound better than via the receiver is a mystery 🤔 as it isn't what should be done.
See post #5.
Correct, no way to adjust volume for a start.
If that's what he is doing, however I doubt it as line output isn't going to drive many headphones is it?

No worries, listening throuh headphones plugged into my turntable is - of course - not my default way of listening. I was just wondering how the turntable sounds without extra equipment. And yes, it sounds better than when it goes through my av receiver. Especially vocals sound a bit brighter. Maybe it’s because of the headphones I’m using. I will try again with some other pair of headphones.

You'd go a long way to find someone else doing it that way Feelio - a very long way - and with good reason.

That won't properly tell you how the turntable sounds.
You've obviously found that you get some sound.
But, apart from the lack of volume control, there's a MASSIVE impedance mismatch from line out into headphones.

That really is surprising....and doesn't say much for the receiver.

Best option would be to get a PM-6007 on home loan.
Id be amazed if you didn't find the headphones output from that to be WAY better than direct from the turntable's line output.
A much better way to find out what your turntable (and headphones) can properly do.
