Hi, all at my wits end with this one. My neice came to stay and is trying to connect to my wireless router. She could before, but since her last visit I have changed the router and the acess code.

So her (windows Vista) machine sees the network, I type in the correct code and it shows as connected BUT only in local mode, no internet access. I have hard wired it in now as I type so no probs on the LAN connection, just wont connect on wireless.

I have downloaded all service packs etc etc together with updating all drivers but it still doesnt work

Help please, in step by step idiots form if possible thanks

Get the MAC code for her wireless connection(if it is connected locally you can see it on attached devices through the router) and allocate a fixed IP for that Mac code.(hardwire is a different mac to wireless)

Hmm. I had terrible trouble connecting my Vista machine to wireless, until it just worked one day.

What's the router?

Have you changed from using WEP to WPA2 since changing routers?

Has the router name (ie the name that pops up when you search for wireless networks) changed or is it the same as the old one? If the same, may be worth 'forgetting' that network on the Vista machine and reconnecting, making sure you're using whatever protocol has been set up on the router (ie WEP or WPA2 - WPA2 is better).

RGD - don't most domestic routers have either fixed or dynamic IPs, therefore setting a fixed one for one machine won't be possible without stuffing up all the other machines on the n/w?

EDIT - actually, I suppose you could set up the DHCP server to have a range of 100 up (say), and put a static IP address for 1 machine below 100...though if you fancy explaining to TB how to do that, be my guest :D

John,

Its a belkin surf router, yes its changed from WEP to WPA2. It sees the connection and "connects" I have made sure I am on WPA2 personal with AES encryption as stated in my router through 192.168.2.1

Connected fine now no problems but as soon as unplug the little "world" sign goes on the connection tab bottom right of the screen. When I open up it says my network name however it says "unidentified network"

foreign machines coming in to a domestic network( I am referring to my kids friends piling in with PSPs and touches etc) can cause havoc. They have multiple network profiles on their machines and just get confused.Yes my router has a fixed address so I am not sure where you are heading?

Edit-just seen your edit. It's bed time so I am not sure I can help to that extent.Sorry TB.

My general point is that static IP addresses need a bit of planning to get right!

No need for exclamation marks!

Edit- and for a one off occasion, just allocate the IPaddress that the internal network has allocated under DHCP, it's not going to kill anything.

This is not helping me guys

Right. Might be worth trying to set up guest access. I'm guessing that Belkin routers all act the same so take a look at this:

http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/77/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzA3OTE4MDQ1L3NpZC9JOWlVX2x3aw%3D%3D

Change the SSID to 'True Blue Guest', or at least something to differentiate between it and your normal network, set a password and then try connecting wirelessly to *that* network.

Had a sort of similar problem a while back... Just tried to find the thing I used to fix it - try this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934430. This could be the issue, if not it's worth a try, and it includes a link to test for other issues if it doesn't fix it...

That's wireless networking for you! And just as I was going to dive in with some suggestions... Glad you finally got it all working. Windows Vista can be very problematic when connecting wirelessly. Updating the driver for the wireless network adapter normally sorts it but I see you had already tried that. It seems that the golden rule of technology has come into play: if it doesn't work, switch it off and then back on again. It's amazing how often this fixes issues when all else has failed!

Indeed. Shame I had to lose my internet and sonos on the main computer in the meantime. Looking back I think it all sorted when I removed the router, hardwired my main pc in got that working then re-installed the router from scratch.

Anyway tis all working now, sonos included
