Hi everybody,

After having spent a considerable amount of time looking into updating my home system I finally decided to call it a day amid all that confusion and get some advice being not very versed when it comes to surround sound systems.

I have Denon AVR 3802 7.1 amp + 2 KEF Q5 speakers at the front so now that I am a proud owner of Play Station 3 which I use for BluRay / DVD playback I thought it would be nice to have a full surround sound system and that is where my troubles start. I am finding it increasingly difficult to get some impartial advice as to which center / rear speakers would go along with my current setup. Those of you that know what KEF Q5s look like surely know that they are like tree trunks producing a considerable amoutn of bass so to start with, would I need a sub woofer at all or not, would it really make all that difference and if you think it would then please do recommend me one. As for center / rear speakers I have been told not to bother but to ditch the lot and start from scratch as notning currently available would go along with my outdated system. Well, I refuse to believe that to be honest. I forked out 2.5K a few years ago and I refuse to believe that no currently available center / rear speaker would make nice surround system with what I already have.

Any advcie will be very much appreciated.

Best regrds

There is a pair of Q5's going on eBay at the moment if you could accommodate floor standers as rears and if you could find a iQ60c that would intregate well. Failing that the new Q200c/600c and Q100 or bi-pole Q800ds would be a good
match.

Even with floorstanders I'd be tempted to get a decent sub.

Also, any of the rest of the Kef Q range will work well with your front Q5s (there are some Q3s on eBay at the moment) or if space is tight in the back then perhaps 2 (or 4 if you're planning to go for full 7.1) of the Kef 'eggs' from either the 2005 or 3005 ranges. Go for a full size centre if possible, but the centre from the 3005 package is almost as worthy an alternative.

Hi there,

Thanks a lot for your response, both of you.

I saw those Q3s and they look just like what I need.

I will go for a sub too, thankfully space is not really a problem.

I have been told that unless I get a sub in I will not really know what I am missing so lets have a go and see.

Cheers.
