Advice on universal remote control please.....

I've just looked at the Logitech 555. It sounds good but I'm a bit ignorant as to how these remotes work. Is it right that you can configure your exact machines to the remote so that it knows what options you need for each one? Can those who own a universal remote please let me know if they are easy to use and worth getting. I don't really want one that does 80% of what my individual ones do but every now and then I have to get out the Denon remote or the Sky remote to access something. Any comments would be appreciated.....

Thanks Mr Orange. It looks like the Harmony 555 it is then for me. I have read that the US version of the 555 is called the 550 (I think), would this be compatible to our machines in the UK?
