i am looking at 2 different Tv's and cant make up my mind.

After extensive searching of internet forums, speaking to salesman (richer sounds) i just cant decide.

50" LG 50PK350 v 42" LGLE425900

So many 'purists' say plasma is the only way, yet led lcd is a newer(better?) tech.

Also hearing that 100hz led will be a lot better than plasma.

The 50 is appealing due to the size (man thing?) but really i just want the best picture for my budget.

i am not too bothered by freevied as i would prefer a seperate recordable box anyway.

Its to be hooked to a Denon AVR1911 and PS3 (soon to be replaced by a dedicated blu-ray player.

Thoughts?

Thanks Max,

i have read your thread on the PK350 and it does sound impressive.

Looking forward to the November 11th review as well.

When looking at sets in stores i assume the setting are manufacturer defaults?

yep, most of the time tv's on shop floors are poorly setup, usually set to vivid or dynamic. if you compare the lg lcd to the plasma in store the lcd is more likely to look better unless you get the remotes and put them both on the cinema/expert, etc setting. then you can make a better comparison..

Matt you're mentioning 100hz frame rate on LED. The beauty of plasmas is that plasmas handle motion better than LCD/LED. Always have, not sure if they always will (watch this space). Higher frame rates was a cure for motion issues on LCD, which is why I cant fathom why Panasonic feel the need to charge more wonga for 600hz plasmas, as my 2008 PX80 plasma is 'only' 100hz and handles motion beautifully. Money spinner Panasonic?? Go plasma IMHO.

I don't know the specifics but I prefer the idea of LED.

Thinner, lighter, more economical, longer life (in theory), runs cooler.

But then I am only ever going to be interested in the 32" models (and I don't care about 3D) so I don't know how the advantages/disadvantages of each technology stack up when you get to 50" or so.

Got a year and a half of the warranty left on our current LCD so I will worry about it in 2012 (Around the same time we get Freeview HD in our area too.) Whatever we go for, it'll all be a bit cheaper by then I hope.

How far do you sit from your tv? if its less that 2 meters, regardless how appealing it sounds i wouldnt opt for the 50" as it would be simply too big.

It's not just the display type, it's the processing engine behind it. LED will run rings around most plasmas for stationary pictures but once things start to move the processing has more to do. I think that it's then the quality of the processing becomes vital, not just the refresh rate but other factors too. If you get a chance, watch football on both TV's you're looking at, then if possible get some footage of flames against a dark background. It's amazing how often LCD goes pixellated with footage of flames or sunsets. Plasmas can often handle this type of material better.

The room is 3 meters wide, so about 2.6 from the set.

at that distance a 50inch should be fine, you wouldnt want to be any closer though imo..

Ok,

looked at these in store.

The LG's motion was slightly jumpy compared to the LED which i thought was odd.

I messed about with the setting (from this forum) and managed to get a nice warm picture.

However, i wasnt sure if it looked right due to the other TV's being set so vivid - wildlife footage was being shown and the snow scenes were quite blue on the other sets - made the LG look dull?

Even my wife noticed the juddering motion.

Is this a ropey in-store set as everyone on here loves it.

I'm really not sure what to do.

I will also be playing games on it.

Also, forgot to mention i am concerened by the lack of inputs.

I run a AV, BD, PS3 and Freeview.

The LG only has 1 scart and 2 HDMI's, how is everyone else coping with it?

If it helps, and if you're looking to buy in the next few years rather than now, I have it on good authority that a few of the big players are jointly working on a kind of fusion LCD/Plasma screen tech that should offer the best of both worlds!

I have no idea how it works (can't really think how the two would combine) and when it may be available but the results are supposed to be impressive.

So the plasma vs. lcd debate continues. Rather than debating the merits of either technology, doesn't it make more sense to judge each TV based on performance rather than the perceived merits or drawbacks of the technology it uses? Simply decide which pictue you like the best and buy that one...

Wow, i thought this thread was dead and buried.

I actually bought the LG 350 plasma.

The review in the WHF was enough + the fact Richer sounds had it for £550 - which i got down to £530.
