Different route for you Cynica. I breath different air to the whatsahifi regafanboy club byraway . However if I was restricted to 6k this is the way I would start demming.

Gyro SE / Tecnoarm Circa 1800 Quid

Icon Audio PS1 Phono Stage Circa 1200

Icon Audio Stereo 40 with KT88s Circa 1700

Benz Micro Ace SL 600 quid ish.

Epos Elan 35s 1200.

That would give you a cracking vinyl set up in my opinion.

Over budget at rrp but shop around and could well come in under budget.

Blitz any other suggestions into the weeds.

In my honest opinion of course. :)

Nice, I find most systems based around mainstream components to sound very similar, not presentation of course that varies significantly, but in an ability to sound exactly like a hi fi system, aimed at the mid priced enthusiast, is supposed to sound.

Not easy to explain really, there is a sort of 'standard' that has become apparent in recent years that mid priced components need to conform to in order to be successful, I hear it all the time and find it less than engaging.

For that reason I often look at components from outside the mainstream for my own use and occasionally suggest them on here, usually to a degree of derision.

I like the Stereo 40 as being as close to my own amplifier for sensible money as it is possible to get but have never heard it paired with modern Epos speakers, would love to give it a try.

Similarly I have never been a fan of the Gyrodec, very much a 'me too' product in my view, I would go for the Concept mc with a solid state phono stage and put any savings into the speakers.

hmmm nice, i'd love to try a gyro deck with an electrocompanient amp and some vienna acoustics.

i guess finding a dealer for that would be like finding the preverbial rocking horse poo.

no wonder people have to resort to second hand and ebay for this kinda thing, its not easy or cheap

I have to be honest insomuch as I'm taking a flyer with the Epos *. Going by the OPs earlier posts they could 'on paper' be a good amp/speaker/lugholes preference match. The speakers I would like to have added ,which I know work brilliantly, would have blown his budget into the wilderness from the get go ,lol.

* Im fairly sure that they haven't got that run for cover treble lift , rare with modern day loudspeakers , which is why I lobbed them in the mix plus easy peasy to drive. The Tecno arm is a tad on the bright side ,so all should gel nicely ,if that kind of sound reproduction floats yer boat. We will see eh.

Wow, thanks for all the advice so far!

Lots of votes for rega so far, do you think an all rega system would be a good move?

In response 2 some other suggestions and questions, would the naim ovator s400s be a tad large for my room?

Have always loved the gyrodec so that would be near the top of my list, vinyl will be me my main sauce but I'll also use spotify 2 check out new stuff.

As for the sound I like im not sure of the technical terms but the speakers I've liked have been monitor audio and Dynaudios not as keen on PMC and Spendor.

I like most types of rock music, classic, hard, folk, prog, krautrock, shoegaze, experimental, post rock, indie, post punk,

With what has been advised taken into account and, if you do not mind buying ex-demo stuff, there are some very good Origin Live turntables coming up from the manufacturer directly on Ebay.

I might be tempted to upgrade myself. :)

Oh and amp wise I like floyd droids idea or if you stick with solid state then buy something that has a really good moving magnet phono stage built in. I am thinking along the lines of a Roksan Caspian, Creek Destiny 2, or the Rega Elicit R. Most manufacturers that make turntables as well as amplifiers tend to have good phono stages in their amps (Rega / Roksan / etc).

You've been given good advice so far, and a lot of what I was going to recommend has appeared.

The one thing I would warn against is tunnel vision for any particular product.........ie. make your shortlist and do lots of demos. Remember, as has been rightly said, system synergy is an important factor. Also, try and hear the final choices at home, as room acoustics can make or break a system.

I also agree with the suggestion that you should spend at least a third of your budget on the TT

FWIW my suggestions would be as follows:

Turntables

You can't go far wrong with Rega, Avid, Mitchell, Linn, Clearaudio, Roksan and Townshend.

Amps

Electrocompaniet, Sugden, Musical Fidelity, Rega and Pathos. Floyd Droid's suggestion of Icon Audio will sound "beautiful", and is well worth hearing to see if Valves are for you.

Speakers

Kef R Series / LS50, Sonus Faber Venere Series, Focal, Tannoy, ProAc and Vienna Acoustics.

Nb. - My picks are in italics.

- I haven't highlighted any TTs as my knowledge is out of date. I have owned both Linn and Rega in the past.

- With that budget, I would probably go with: Roksan Radius 5.2 + Sugden A21SE + Kef R500s (or R300s / LS50s)

Think what im going to do is find a good dealer with lots of different gear and get auditioning.

In regards to the KEF R500 do you think they would be suitable in an average sized room like mine? As i said before i prefer a good floorstander but my room size limits me to smaller ones.

Speaker/Room is far more important than anything else. You need to decide where the speakers are going to go - distances from rear/side wall - whether you'll have any absorption around them (which you definitely should if you're thinking of spending that sort of money).

When you know that you can decide whether standmount or floorstander is more appropriate. You need to bear in mind that speakers need plenty of room to 'breathe' - corners are the worst possible place to put them.

On a serious note, quandaries like the OPs are where this forum falls flat on its a**e. Baring Lyndsay and myself I cant think of any other offers given to peeps to come over for a listen if in the near vicinity. If the OP is close enough he is more than welcome to arrange a meet. Just to get a feel for whats out there in the money pit.

@ the OP. Register on the Wam and lob your original post up on there , I pretty much guarantee* you will get offers of mini bake offs.

Unless you are in a bivvi half way up Annapurna , but hey ye never know.

It might help if you split your listening in two, record player and phono stage (if needed) and amp speaker combinations. Gives you more chances to hear different combinations than relying on one dealer to have everything.

Big speakers are more difficult to place correctly and keep under control, personally I would avoid them at this level in favour of quality stand mounts.

The R500s are a slim, but surprisingly powerful floorstander. They have a 2 part bung arrangement (outer bung or full bung), which gives flexibility in tailoring the bass.

They have to be tried in situ, but I suspect they should be OK. If you love the way they sound, but find they are too much for the room, then the R300s or LS50s would work for sure.

FWIW. They are probably the best floorstanders I've heard for the money.......imo. a "must hear."

dont really know what you mean Macspur. it's actually very good advice.

I heavily modded 1210 with Audio Technica stylus into a good quality pro audio mixer and topped off with some Genelecs will do an incredible job.
