3D TV and none 3D amps

I was completely against the whole 3D thing because I thought I'd have to buy a new TV, Blu Ray player and an amp. I was going to buy a new TV and Blu Ray player and just forget the whole 3D thing. I am now considering the Samsung P50C7000 3D TV which is available around £1500. I could then buy a 3D capable Blu Ray player for around £400. I would definitely go for this option to future proof myself, only if I didn't have to also replace my Denon 2310 receiver.

Basically what I am is asking is what is the latest news on connecting none 3D amps/recievers to a 3D TV/Blu Ray player? I remember reading something about certain Blu Ray players having dual HDMI outputs to somehow allow these things to be hooked up together.

Thanks for any help that can clear this up.

You'll need an AV amp or receiver with 3D passthrough if you're going to use it to connect to a 3D Blu-ray player - Onkyo and Pioneer have confirmed new 3D-capable models on the way.

Otherwise you'll need a 3D Blu-ray player with two HDMI outputs, one to pass sound to your current Denon receiver, another to send the 3D picture to the TV. The only 3D Blu-ray player we've tested so far is the Samsung BD-C6900, which only has one HDMI out.

I was going to say if the TV supports a HDMI out to the receiver then you could almost get away with it with a few more connections but

reading the manual your receiver then has to have ARC which i guess is a Copy protection thing, I assume. I am not an expert just some thing to think about also.

page 9

"Samsung TVs support HDMI 1.4 (with 3D and Audio Return Channel). However, the ARC(Audio Return
Channel) function is only supported on HDMI IN 2(ARC)."

on another note:

Has any one heard about the Sony 3D sets yet? I heard a rumor that the
PS3 will be 3D ready only with their TV's can some one confirm this.
thanks

Ah, then to be future-proof -- given that the PS3 only has one HDMI out -- I should be looking at amps that allow 3D pass-through... or accept that if 3D does really take-off, and I'm surprisingly taken with it, I'll have to buy a 3D Blu Ray player with two HDMI outs. This seems like a hell of an outlay for what feels like a gimmick at the moment, which is, of course, the point (to make us part with as much cash as possible by having to upgrade all of our equipment). I'm aware I may be proven wrong here, but I hope the whole 3D thing turns out to be a passing fad...

PS3 will be 3D capable with any 3D ready TV.

Good to know thanks

Again I'm swinging towards forgetting 3D altogether, far too much hassle for what it would return I think.

As the ps3 is 3D capable, i was under the impression that all Sonys blu-ray players that are profile 2 were getting a firmware upgrade around June to make them 3D capable from what has been said in other forums, or is this not true?

not true , the ps3 is unique in that its more powerful than any blu-ray player , its like a computer really , so it can handle the processing needed for 3d , excisting players cant ...

yep, PS3 is going to get the update.. to 3D compatibility but the rest of their line I wouldn't count on it.

They are already announcing 3d Blueray players for this year.

I saw the demo of the Samsung 3D TV and I was really impressed with the picture. It is nothing like the Blue and red paper glasses I have used before. then again you have to buy the special glasses.

ta , is it true that there may be some 3d bluray players due that have two hdmi outs ? so one could use a non 3d amp ?

also , can a 1.3 spec hdmi cable be connected to a 1.4 port ? im assuming so..

Yes, there's already one forthcoming model, from Panasonic, with twin HDMI outs for just this purpose. And yes, the HDMI socket is exactly the same badly designed flaky thing, whichever version of the spec it supports

I would be shocked if most new 3D BD players dont come with two HDMI.

If they want to sell lots of players, it makes sense that more people can buy them and use current amps.....

When the PS3 has had the 3D update will it connect to your amp or TV via a single 1.4 spec HDMI lead then?

Andrew Everard:Well, given that the PS3 has only one HDMI output, that's how it'll connect.

Oh yes!

Well in that case I may as well hook up the PS3 to my Denon 2310 via a HDMI 1.4 for any future 3D games/Blu Rays. I could then also buy a decent separate Blu Ray player for regular Blu Rays.

Andrew Everard:Except of course that the 2310 won't pass 3D video to a 3D TV...

I give up!

I take it that it's the Panasonic DMP-BDT300 your referring to? According to the Panasonic brochure it also has 7.1 channel analogue outputs.

Yes, I think that's the model I had in mind, and yes I believe it does. Didn't mention them as not relevant to this discussion, but they would of course even allow the player to be used with 3D TVs and receivers unable to accept HD audio over HDMI.
