sony have said there on course to have 25 blu ray 3d films but the audio will remain the same as the standard blu rays so you will be able to take digital to the amp for sound and hdmi1.4 to your 3d tv if you go down that route. Andrew are you saying that alot of 3d films from other makers will have better audio than standard 2d blu rays.

No, not saying that at all. Rather making the point that unless you have a 3D compatible amp, or a 3D player able to output video through one HDMI and audio through another, or video through HDMI and audio through multichannel analogue outs (assuming your receiver has matching multichannel audio inputs), you won't be able to get 3D vision and the current HD audio formats from Dolby and DTS.

i think the issue is , that the extra data on a 3d bluray , cant pass through a 1.3 spec hdmi , along with the usual hd audio , fast enough , thats why 1.4 spec is needed , it can cope with all the usual bluray data ,sound and pic , aswell as the xtra data thats 3d related..

but i could be wrong..

ok , i seem to have my head around it now then , its interesting that the ps3 can apparently pass the necessary data once firmware updated , over 1.3 hdmi , i guess it will compress some of it in some way , that a 3dtv will be able to dechipher ...

I'm still not sure what the PS3 upgrade will entail or deliver, since it's yet to happen, but there's no difference in the connector between HDMI 1.3 and 1.4, so the PS3 will just be passing 3D over HDMI.

As far as I understand it, it's not a matter of compression, just that the PS3's processor is up to the task of handling 3D, with a firmware upgrade.

maybe compression is the wrong word , but i believe the ps3 will have to do some jiggery pokery (im running out of techno jargon here) with the data , otherwise why would there be a need for the 1.4 standard ? perhaps any relevant 3dtv will need a ps3 compatbility firmware upgrade ? that would be my guess , i guess we will know in time ...

What I'm saying is that the firmware upgrade to the PS3 may make its HDMI output effectively a 1.4 version, hence no need for jiggery, or indeed pokery...
