1st generation HDTVs & upscaling

Hi,

In the bedroom I have one of the first generations of Samsung HD TVs, i.e. pre 1080p. It does not have any HDMI sockets either. I'm looking to replace the DVD player. Are there any upscaling options which fit outside of HDMI? Or am I best just going for a decent player and investing in the scart?

does it have a DVI connection on the back?

HDMI to DVI works just no sound. a pair of phono leads sorts that.
