11.2 where are you?

Nearly 2 years on and still only the Onkyo 3030 as my choice of 11.2 receiver with Atmos.

Also I want HDR for future proofing.

What is happening, people?

Most home cinemas are in the lounge, (They have to blend in with the rest of the lounge) therefore there are very few cases where a 7.1.4 system is possible, thus an 11 channel receiver is overkill.

You also have to take into consideration that getting 11 channels into a regular receiver size box that will fit in a normal rack takes some doing, (Even if the amplifiers use class D) which is another reason 11 channel receivers are in short supply. (Anthem only has 5 channels of full power the rest of the channels are limited to 60W due to the size constraints)

You have overlooked Anthem MRX 1120.
It was actually a Facebook post on the Anthem that brought me back to the subject.
My point was that the Onkyo was released when I was getting my extension built 18months ago and so I installed a 7.1 wiring setup.
And still I have the choice of the ancient Onkyo or the wildly expensive Anthem.
No Marantz, Denin, or Yamaha? I don't want to go down the 9.2 plus external stereo amp route.

Sadly, not yet. Onkyo may announce a 3030 replacement later this year.
Thank you. What with the upfiring speaker add on thingies I was hoping that more companies would adopt the full 11.2 ampage.

Been 18months since the 4 wires have been sticking out my ceiling!!

There's no reason why Onkyo 3030 won't support HDR. It is HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. It doesn't have DTS:X though.

Can it be added with a firmware update?

9.1 plus an external stereo amplifier doesn't bother me, but it does seem to concern many people, you and bigboss being just two. If Onkyo update their 11-channel receiver at a reasonable price - say about £2,600 - they would clean up. My personal choice, based on various things including appearance, would be the somewhat overpriced nine-channel Denon X7200W plus my existing stereo amplfier.

Two others spring to mind. Yamaha RX-A3050 and Marant AV7702 Mk 2.
Both require a stereo power amp to deliver 11 channels though. The Marantz will actually select and deliver 11 from a possible 13 according to content. So you could use it in 7.2.4 for Atmos and 9.2.2 for DTS:X.

That Marantz is only a pre-amplifier. You need Marantz 8077 seven channel power amp and 7055 five channel power amp to go with it.

The Marantz competitor to Yamaha RX-A3050 is SR7010.

My bad - you're right. AFAIK though it does offer "11 from 13" flexibility.

Totally agree few have either the space or pocket to do this and visually it will look awful. Completely ridiculous idea aimed at a microscopic section of the public

Behave. More and more people are doing up their houses these days and a fair proportion are either having multiroom systems and/or a dedicate "theatre" room, to coin an American phrase. Even in the ever-so-provincial West Midlands a fair few houses in the top half of the housing market have a dedicated cinema room.

As part of our extension, I had just such a room built and I did all the wiring myself. I had the foresight to realise that 7.1.4 was the upper end of the housing sector for processsing.

When Dolby Digital first came out people said and still say "too many speakers".

Well if you are doing room from scratch or refurbing, you can easily hide the wiring and get subtle speakers.

So the market for a 11.2 speaker isn't so much about quantity of units sold but it's more about those receiveres being higher end ones. So it's the same "high" end market there has always been.

I just wish I had more choice.

Agreed. I've got a normal sized lounge (17' X 13') with a 7.1.4 system. Yes, the market isn't that big today, but there's still a market. In the future, people wanting to do their rooms up for home cinema use will at least consider having Atmos speakers installed.

ill be going for 5.1.4 system but I'm happy using an additional power amp for my x4100.

If you're planning to upgrade your 4100 anyway, maybe worth going for a 9.2 channel amp instead.

yeah Ive been looking at the Denon 6200 but it's £1600... X4200 is £799( it will drop in a couple of months) plus around 300 for a Denon power amp..... I'm not fussed with the extra hardware, it makes my rack look better.... :)
