Andrew..thanks for the suggestion. I'm finding the speakers a bit 'harsh', if I put on pop, electric, rock and turn the sound up it is frankly unbearable..there is not enough weight and warmth to the sound. I feel the acoustics of the room are partially the issue...

That is the price you pay for buying slimline speakers with 6" drivers and a port for the bass.

Speakers are a personal choice. Are you happy to put up with bass compromises in order to have modern slimline looks, or would you prefer to compromise on the size and looks in order to get better bass?

... I actually ended up with the Tannoy Precision 6.2 Lmited Edition speakers as the retailer sold the standard ones I'd reserved and gave me a break on the price. First impressions are mid range / vocals are very good and a great sound stage is projected. Bass seems a bit light ...

I'd say asthetics play a minor part in my speaker selection (although they are nice:). I guess driver size is only one of many variables which will determine the bass performance of a speaker. Care to recommend any alternatives ?

A pair of Mackie HR824 Mk2 active speakers (about £1200 per pair) which could be used directly from your StreamMagic by using it as a pre-amp.

Judging from your thoughts of the Tannoy's I expect that the Mackie's could be just what you're after. They have the same level of sound quality but with deeper and more powerful bass. You also wouldn't need your power amplifer so you could put it to use elsewhere or sell it and put the money towards something else.

The Mackies only have a 9 inch bass driver. Better than a 6 inch for bass, but not as good as a decent 12", 15", 18" or bigger. David should try speakers with 12" or bigger bass drivers to see if they fit the bill for him. Going 2nd hand should get him much better sound quality for the money spent.

Have a demo of hegel amps
They really take hold of the bass drivers and control the bass. Then id demo soeakers that can produce the amount of bass your after.

This could get expensive.......
But dont worry. We will enjoy spending your money hahaha

Serious 2nd hand may be better

After extensive listening and swapping about of components I've reached the conclusion that something's not right with this setup. Amp or speakers? Who knows! Probably sending it all back

Have word with Colin from IQ speakers , for £1500 he could put you a system together that will far exceed your expectations . *good*

If you do listen to some of these and you don't buy something I will be very surprised indeed!

So would I!

Had two Polish guys demo my amp Silvertone GP day, I know this as i missed it beacuse they listened for 3 hours! They both had just bought Tannoy Presision 6.2 which they bought with them. After 30 mins of Polish, they turned to me and both said "We think your speakers are much better" They bought the Amp I suspect in the near future they will be off loading the Tannoys! You are more than welcome to come over for a demo you will be amazed! Colin and cheers Electro he knows how good the amps are.

Apologies to the OP for going of topic *smile* .

Colin I noticed in the IQ Abrahamsen link there is a picture of some tasty looking large monoblocks on the floor next to the speakers, do you know what are they are ? They must be new !

They look a bit like Electrocompaniet AW400's in size and shape.

They are perhaps the Abrahamsen V5.0?

200 Watt into 8 Ohm @ 370 Watt into 4 Ohm
Maximum power 450 Watt into 0.5 Ohm
1000VA Toroidal Transformer
100.000uF Capacitors
Input impedance: Balance 50KOhm Single 100KOhm
Frequency response: DC to 1MHz -3dB
Dimensions WxHxD: 30x23x45
Weight 19kg.

0-1MHz at -3dB???? I thought going up to 200kHz flat was impressive wide bandwidth. *wacko* Surely it's a misprint???
