Hi all

I have a budget of £1000 to spend on a 50" LCD/Plasma. I have been looking at the LG 50PG6000 and seen it for approx £750 online. Advice on any other makes/models would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

£1,000 is too little for a 50", if I were you I would buy a better quality 42". Still, if you REALLY need a 50" at that price for some reason, go for the LG, it is great value for money.

OK people got it down to a choice of four sets to choose from so your expert advice would be most appreciated:

1) Samsung PS50A456P at £648 delivered (yet can't find any reviews on this set??)

2) LG 50PG6000 at £724.90 delivered

3) Panasonic TH50PZ80B at £1080 delivered

4) Sony Bravia KDL 46W4000 at £1093 delivered

What do you guys think?

Depends what your viewing distance is, what you watch and therefore whether Full HD would be of any benefit or not.

Also consider the Panny 50PX8, £699.

Andy Clough:
Hi Mamba 25

I'd go for the Panasonic or the Sony.

Cheers Andy, just out of curiosity though, how good is the Samsung PS50A456P, have you reviewed it before?

hi, I have the samsung PS50Q96HDX. I paid almost £1500 for it 18 months ago. It's now £750 in curry's/ comet etc. It's not full hd, but it's picture is stunning. the first year, I was only feeding standard def sky through it, but it's upscaler is so good that it was the best picture i'd ever seen. For the last few months i've had sky hd and it is absolutely fantastic. I would say, if the majority of your viewing will be sky hd, don't bother getting a full hd set, because the set will have to downscale the signal, and you want the signal to be messed around with as little as possible. If you're minly a blu-ray man, Full hd would be the way to go.

Hope this helps.

Ok people scrap my previous choices, I went into my local TV superstore (well big store that sold tvs and fridges) initially to buy the Sony 46W4500 largely based on WhatHiFi review/Award winner blah blah.

Thing is, I saw it up against the new Samsung LE46A856 LCD both running BBC HD channel side by side and the lovely assistant gave me the remotes to tweak to my hearts content and try as I might the Sony 'black' levels were nothing compared to the Samsung's. Sony telly had a 'milky' black at best and that could be down to the display model, lighting etc etc but then again how come the 8 series Samsung was so fine? Oh and don't get me started on the depth size of the two, let's just say the Sony needs to diet heavily to get anywhere near the Samsung.

Anyhow, enough waffle, I went online to find best price for the 8 series and it is a couple hundred quid more than the Sony but I have also found that there is a 46 inch Samsung 9 series (LE46A956)...do any of the experts on this forum rate the Samsung 8 or 9 series as being good sets and is it worth an extra hundred quid to go for the 9 over the 8 series?

Help would be most appreciated :)

hello sir, I'm new, now I have a sony 32 s2530 tv, and the blacks are not to good, and you are right, on a lot of sony sets the black does look milky, the new series 9 tv from samsung will give you very deep blacks, for one reason, it has a new technology called led backlight, now a new sony tv has this and its called the x4500, now that has got brilliant reviews, but the price is just to much, the new samsung 9 will give you very deep blacks, I strongly recommend you go over your price and get the new 9 series, we all know sony charges a lot for there sets, you pay for the name, the series 9 will give you a very good image, it has 1080p, 100hz, and most important led backlight, i hope this has helped. And also, I will be getting rid of my sony soon and getting the 9 series, 46 inch.ÿ

I on the other hand strongly recomend a good plasma set at this sort of screen size especially seeing as you have comented on the Sony's weakness regarding black levels as IMHO I am yet to see any LCD come close to a Good Plasma when it comes to Black levels.

I have a Samsung PS-50P96FDX (last years 1080P model) and payed just over a grand for it and it blows any LCD I have seen at this screen size out of the water.
