HifiNews&RR.

For several reasons; Layout, Photographs, in-depth reviews, PM's test bench, Opinion pages, Ken Kessler (and others), Show reports, Ratings system and last but not least ... Record reviews including High Resolution Download lab reports which can be illuminating.

Imho no other mag now offers anywhere near the (hifi) info of HifiNews&RR.

Downsides? - I can't afford most of the stuff!

I have bought the last 3 issues (next one due) and I am still meaning to get an online subscription to allow me to browse their archive. I really should get around to it.

Maybe I should also mention that with regards to sound 'preferences' I have often agreed with this mag. WhatHifi seems to prefer a fast and rythmic sound over the often more demure nature favored by HifiWorld and David Price of HifiChoice who seems to do a lot of the reviews these days.

I am generalizing and there are exceptions, as always.

for hifi news and record review, also like hifi choice and as I like films, I also read home cinema choice as well.

plus like drummerman, I just wish I could afford some of the more exotic items they review.

one publication missing I'm afraid is what hifi, I stopped reading it when they started reviewing items I don't consider hifi like smartphones, soundbars etc.

The review of Devialet's top dog Original d'Atelier Ltd Edition amplifiers is superb. However, one of the best things about this amplifier (apart from reported performance) is the wooden crate it comes in. Like fine wine. However there is no picture. I don't personally like the ostentatious gold plating but sure would love the box :)

Also very interesting (as a Spotify and Tidal subscriber) is Barry Fox's 'Code of Silence' editorial on the Opinion pages (p.105) of the latest edition.

Gramophone - ok I know it's not strictly a hifi magazine but it reviews the music I like in great depth and Andrew's hifi pages give me enough hifi information (and I trust Andrew).

+1 for HiFiNews and record review. Like their system of rating vinyl, CD, downloads and reviews in general because I tend to agree with most of them in equipment I have eventually auditioned myself.

Also like HiFi+ but they do review a lot of stuff I could never afford but their style is likeable.

Hifi World for their layout and competitions, a couple of which I have actually won. ;-)

On the subject of foreign magazines, anyone else noticed that the German magazine Stereo is now available in English? Well, Englisch, perhaps, as there seems to be a little 'lost in translation' oddness here and there, but generally very interesting. And AFAICS it's free, or at least it is at the moment!

Stereophile.

It's good but hard to find in the UK. I did notice drummerman didn't specify country.

You can subscribe online from Zinio for £ 8.41 (12 issues, each £0.58).

I do think The Gramophone is better but I am more comfy with Stereophile, probably out of habbit. I am a big fan of online Stereophile archives and read it frequently back when Stephen Mejias had a blog and wasn't on the printed edition.

I like the more in-depth 2 x double-page reviews of Hifi Choice and have bought quite a few of those recently. I do buy other mags occasionally but that usually depends on them reviewing a particular product I was interested in.

Off topic slightly but also get the occasional Jazzwise & Songlines.

I subscribe to Hi-Fi Choice and have done for about 3 years. I originally started when they offered a new Chord I/C if you took out a 6 month subscription. I thought why not as the cables were worth more secondhand than the subscription. I subsequently sold the cables on as soon as they arrived and that covered my subscription costs. After 6 months I just kept it going as to be fair it is a pretty good read, epecially about all the equipment I haven't got a hope in hell of ever affording. I find the music reviews normally spot on too, Nigel Williamson tends to be on my wavelength most of the time.

I used to like Hifi Choice. However, with PM not contributing anymore and David Price, as capable and knowledgeable as he most certainly is, doing a lot of the reviewing, I kind of lost interest a little. Having said that, I still, on occasions, buy the magazine. (No idea why as I hardly buy new products).

Someone mentioned Hifi+ and I kind of forgot about that one. I wouldn't rank it above HN&RR for content but they too have good in-depth review albeit without test data. Also, the quality of the paper and whole magazine is better than any of the others. One for the aficionado and collectors bookshelf.

A good Uncle started me off with his old HFN/RR in the early 70s (when they cost 20p each!) still got them, they make interesting history books.

Remember also 'Hi-fi Answers', 'Hi-fi For Pleasure' and 'Choice' when it was A5 size? - never chucked any of them away (hoarder)

I've always quite liked 'Choice' and yes, HFN are thorough but, as has been said, a little bit elitist. We've probably all bought loads of WHFs haven't we? But many are giving the lack of interest in smartphones /soundbars as a reason to give up on WHF. (As someone who don't own a smartphone imagine my joy when I see another smartphone grouptest)

If we (obsessives) like it or not, most normal consumers daily fodder of music is probably dished out by either a tv, bluetooth speaker or smartphone. Some are probably capable of making surprisingly good music, better than even the best walkman's of their time would have managed, yes that includes the Sony Pro).

I see countless young folks with headphones in my local cafe's. I somewhat doubt many of them use an Astell& ... .

With numerous streaming service now offering decent sound quality I can understand the coverage of Phones, Tablets etc as both sources and control units for streamers etc. even if it is not of great interest to myself.

I don't buy any HiFi mags now but in the past my favorite was HiFi News &RR .

Going slightly of topic has anyone heard of AQ magazine ( Audio Quarterly ) ?

It was first published in the UK in Oct/Nov 1997 but only lasted until Oct/Nov 1998 , four magazines in total .

I subscribed to it and have all four magazines it was a very good mag edited by Nick Carr with contributions from Phil Brett, Roy Gregory, Jimmy Hughes, Paul Messenger, Rueben Parry, Pete Christie, and Richard Black, I just wondered if anyone else has heard of it or bought any or was it only me .*smile*

My favourite hi-fi focused magazine is Hi-Fi News & Record Review. The content covers a good range of kit from stuff I'll probably never be able to afford, down to vintage items and 'budget esoterica' that I could, and the writing goes well beyond scratching the surface. I enjoy Ken Kessler's writing very much, but also Andrew Everard's. It's great to see AE given the scope to use his knowledge and superb writing skills to a greater degree than previously and I'm really pleased that he is one of the HFN&RR team. The strong presence of music in the magazine is also great, ensuring that the link between the equipment and it's purpose is always there. I buy every print copy of HFN&RR and have done for quite some time.Like Chris, I also very much enjoy his writing in Gramophone (also, in the most recent issue, in Jazzwise).

Hi-Fi Choice is the other specialist hi-fi mag I read every month, but I subscribe to the digital edition of this. Again there have been some good contributions from AE, and I have always liked David Price's writing, going back to his days at HFW.

What Hi-Fi is still very good at what it does. I don't see it as a specialist hi-fi mag so much these days, as the remit is so wide in also providing so much coverage of TVs, portable devices and the like, but as a consumer tech magazine with a decent dose of hi-fi content it still very much has a place.

I bought myself a digital subscription to Hi-Fi News & Record Review for christmas.

It is true that a some of the featured kit, is high end in price, but it is still enjoyable to read about.

The magazine also features articles about old music venues - I cannot imagine that in 40 years, hifi magazines will run articles describing the places where teenagers used to gather in hordes, and stare at their smartphones for hours.

I like WHF best because it's the HiFi magazine equivalent of The Sun newspaper and doesn't take itself too seriously.

But no pics of girls with their t*ts out!

Chris

Pictures of half naked women draping themselves over various pieces of HiFi equipment would definitely be an improvement.
