if anyone could help that would be great. i'll make it short and sweet.
got a bush turntable, you know, the one that is built to fit on a modern hifi equipment. the record hangs out a bit. it's definetely got pre amp built into coz it worked fine on me old yamaha amp. it's set to PHONO and i've just put a record on and the sound is horrible! distorted, bleeding, rough and scratchy. i've messed with all the settings and nothing has improved. i've cleaned the stylus and nothing. should i just put it into one of the other analogue inputs (White & Red)?

many thanks for looking and/or helping!

yeah sorry i should have checked before hand but would like to request that this topic be stickied to help someone with similar problem. i changed the vinyl to one of the other inputs and it worked. it must have not been proper phono connectors or .i dunno but it's working.

Two things to check:

- Stylus weight. This being too heavy could distort the sound. Do you have a stylus gauge you can check it with (generally stylus weight should be around 2.0g but check in the manual to be sure).

- Cartridge alignment. Is the phono cartridge on the turntable aligned correctly? You'll need a tracking gauge (generally a card you put over the bearing in the middle with a grid on it that allows you to adjust the cartridge on the end of the tonearm to make sure the angle is right). If your cartridge is fixed the angle should be correct.

Make sure you do have it in the "PHONO" input - the output from a turntable is lower than other sources so you won't be able to hear it in the other inputs (and the PHONO input should also equalise the sound a little so it sounds correct). Check i your turntable has an inbuilt phono stage as if it does, the output level will be too high and it will need to be plugged into AUX. Check this at low volumes too.

Bush turntable has a built-in phono stage, so has the Yamaha. You don't need both. Connecting the Bush to the line input (eg CD, tape in or whatever) is correct.

Is this a Bush MTT1?

If I recall correctly the built in phono pre-amp could be turned on or off by means of a swith on the underside of the turntable. If you're connecting the turntable to the amp's Phono input, turn the turntable's built-in preamp OFF. If using any other line level input keep it switched on.
