yamaha htr4065 / rxv473

Hi there , I have just bought a Yamaha htr 4065 and am using it with 2 sets of speakers ,wharfdale diamond 7.1 and tanoy mx1. Every thing is connected to the amp with hdmi

My problem seems to be getting surround to work right on TV ,(cable TiVo box) most programmes the surround (back) speakers don't do anything and some programme they only just do a few sounds (very quietly) with an annoying whistling sound with speech , I have tried most the settings and don't seem to be able to get them to do much ....

It doesn't seem to be a issue with the amp tho as it works fine on my ps3 and music comes out of all speakers fine .....

This is my first proper surround system and i am not sure if I have set something up wrong or.............any advice would help

I don't have cable TV, I have only Freesat and Freeview but it could simply be that most cable TV programmes are NOT broadcast in any form of surround (five-channel) sound. Certainly on Freesat and Freeview most channels are broadcast in only 2.0 stereo, so the other surround speakers (and the centre) will be silent.

Try playing a movie in a blu ray player, or watch Sky HD for 5.1 sound.

With regards to whistling sound, check all your connections to make sure they're fine. Have you used YPAO auto calibration tool?

I thought it might be something like that as it worked perfectly on ,my ps 3 ,but as I have never tried to set up a system like this before and it seems pretty complicated with many options that I don't know what do ,I thought I would ask ...
As for the whistling , on so,e programme I get a small amount of sound out the back speakers ,mostly miusic but when speech comes out I get a quiet sound like whistling through your teeth when you talk
I used the auto calibration thing ,but edited some of the settings a bit as some of them seemed a little strange
