Wireless Headphones connected directly to tv phono out, does it work?

Do wireless headphones with there small built in amplifier work directly off tv phono outputs?

If so would this benefit a hard of hearing person or would they need an amp as well?

My grandad has a transmitter from the tv that transmits straight to his hearing aid. Would this be better?
