Will you be buying an iPad?

I remember on January 27th 2010 sitting at my computer, looking at the engadget live feed, waiting to see the new tablet. BOOM! There it was. Mr. Jobs holding the much anticipated tablet device. And most of our first impressions were, it's a big iPod Touch! After watching the keynote, I was rather happy with what the tablet can offer.

My question is, will YOU be buying an iPad? I will be buying the 3G version, if it comes out in April over here, contrary to what Mr. Jobs said. My only upset is that we won't be getting iBooks yet. But hopefully, some of the major book companies in the UK can make a nice little deal with the almighty Apple.

Now get posting

I was kind of hoping it would be closer to a MacBook than an iPod but I admit it's quite the object of desire.
Think I'll wait until the next generation before I buy.

I have an ipod touch and i feel its the perfect PDA/mediaplayer etc for the money and the size is perfect. The HP Slate is going to be interesting when it arrives if it has a usb and or optical out so i can connect it to my dacmagic

No. Like Andrew, I don't know what I'd use one for. For surfing the internet, when I'm at home I use my laptop, when I'm at school I use one of the computers available in the library and when on the go, my iphone suffices for my very limited web requirements.

For books, newspapers and magazines - I read books, newspapers and magazines.

For films - my tv and blu ray player (home); laptop - rarely (on the go: train and plane)

Music - iphone/ ipod.

It's just easier for me to carry my laptop around on the rare occasion I need a portable device with enhanced functionality over an iphone. Books, newspapers and music keep me sufficiently entertained whilst on the tube.

Therefore, for the reasons above, I have no need, or desire, to buy an ipad. What I would like is one of the new macbook pros, and for it to feature blu ray.

Mmm, not sure yet, but I'm an Apple fanboy and once I see one for real in my local Apple store I may well be tempted. There are times when the screen on my iPod Touch just isn't big enough (and no jokes about "it must be your age and your eyesight's going" please Mr E!

No, I will not be buying an iPad. I do, however, have a birthday in April that I hope might bring one

Though my birthday wishlist may change once i've had a chance to have a good long play with the thing - I need to know it copes with music and video as well as i'd hope...

I reckon I'll get one eventually, but probably the 2nd or even 3rd generation. It will then become my main "general" laptop at home for email and web browsing, as well as portable media player for long train journeys etc.

if i could use it to control spotify on my mac, then maybe. very disappointed in the memory on offer though. more likely to get a macbook which i know will do everything i want. and when are these companies gonna realise "e-readers" are not as good as books?

No. I'm not really an Apple fan and I don't really see the point of it. To me its technology for the sake of it. I'll stick to my Walkman for portable music, and my laptop for surfing the internet.

Even My next phone is going to be much simpler. I've got fed up of poor battery life on these do-all things and I only ever use it for texting and making calls after the first couple of weeks anyway.

Probably the main reason I'll wait for 2nd / 3rd generation when costs should have dropped enough to allow for a 128 GB (or even 256 GB perhaps) model.

Doesn't hard drive normally go 64gb, 120gb, 250gb, 320gb. Why is that? From 1gb up to 64gb it just doubles and then...

absolutely no interest. It's big pointless device for people with more money than sense. It has very few practical applications. It's a classic solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Depends - RAM normally goes up in the 2, 4, 6, 8, 16, 32, 64, 126, 256, 512, 1024 increments whereas hard drives tend to be different - for instance on most servers, you can get 36 GB, 72 GB, 146 GB, 320 GB, 500 GB etc. hard drives. My guess is solid state drives will follow the same increments as RAM.

I can't help but think that's missing the point of it though, it's not supposed to be a storage device. I think it does point the way forward though, it won't be that long (relatively speaking) before you won't store anything locally, everything will be streamed to wherever you are. I know thin clients like this have been tried in the past but the infrastructure just wasn't good enough to support the idea back then. It will come though.

I won't be. As much as I love gadgets, the iPad does nothing new that my current tech can't do. As for solely using a touchscreen - I imagine it's gonna be a whoooole lot slower to complete simple tasks/text input than it's tactile counterparts.

Unless of course you're Tom Cruise and you've been professionally trained Minority Report stylee.

professorhat:Know where you're coming from, but for it to be a decent media player, it needs quite a bit of storage. That's mainly where I'm coming from.

Media player for where though, on the move your iPod makes much more sense (I'm assuming we're not talking video here, unless you're on a plane or something, I don't know where else you'd use that), at home you're better off streaming from your existing PC or laptop surely?
