Why does everyone want a massive TV?

i picked up my 42" plasma at the weekend.. the shop had a 65" on display.. that was a monster! the corner where i have my tv/speakers just doesnt give me any more room to play with.. so unless i re design the room/space.. then i'm stuck at 42" my parents have a 32" and they think my screen is huge.. i remember seeing a 36" CRT set about 10 years ago and thinking it was massive... i guess times have changed!

No compromise having a projector. Far from it....
And the UK isn't typically buying "massive" TVs - average screen size is just migrating from 32in to 37in (boosted by lower prices/increased availability of 40in LCDs). The big, 50in+ sets still represent a small amount of total UK TV sales.

My philips 32inch lcd from around 3 years back, is the same size in frame as tvs today for 40-42inches.

Yeah but I can watch films on my laptop in bed and that looks pretty big from where I'm lying.
Its not like the quality of TV output - programmes or films - is increasing to match the size. Especially when you look at the kind of films What Hi-Fi promotes in the mag - I mean, who wants to see Adam Sandler's cheesy grin spreading halfway across your living room? Or Sylvester Stallone's man boobs groaning and creaking as he pumps lead into some more racist stereotypes?

Ah now Clare, don't be so precious. You've already stated to me before that the mag is 'proudly mainstream' so I just wonder why - given that mainstream television and film content is becoming worryingly more lowbrow and formulaic - anyone in their right mind would want to spend money celebrating that in bigger and bigger fashion. Surely, its time TV programme quality was linked to screen size? Maybe Sony et al should develop TV sets thats restrict the viewing frame depending on how mind-numbing the signal is? In these organic, macrobiotic health-conscious times, shouldn't one really be paying as much attention to the eyes brain and ears as one does to the heart and six pack?
And what about the children? Will somebody please think of the children?!

Well upscaled dvds look fantastic and blurays wouldnt look as good on smaller tvs.
Gaming (particularly driving games) are so much better on a big screen
Even now on my 46" screen I think I could do with a bigger screen when watching a true widesreen pic (black bars top and bottom)

The Government should impose restrictions on TV sizes in the national interest - no more than 40 inches, I reckon. Maybe even go back to making people watch portables. Any more than that and you get an ASBO for being a show off.

I think you'll find the Nintendo Wii did just as much for my children's health on my 23" TV as it does on my 32".
Personally I find that the bigger the television, the better quality content I want on it, not worse, and I've found that beautiful content - and I do mean beautiful - tends to be rather more highbrow than you suggest.

bennyboy71 i like to watch on a big screen to watch films & blu-ray, i am quite happy with my 46" although sometimes i wish i had a bigger screen.
I notice more of the background on a larger screen which improves viewing.
