Why do i need an optical cable.

Hi Guys, have recently got into home cinema and wondering why do I need to use an optical cable when connecting my dvd player or freeview recorder to my onkyo AV. If I connect the hdmi cable straight to my tv it's fine but connect it to my av and nothing unless I use an optical cable as well.

with your DVD player you should not. (your settings could be wrong)

Some freeview players have issues with HDMI and sound (some time they just send stereo) but in this case I bet is is a setting in the amp.
