which rack?

I am interested to know what people think about simply placing my cd player and amp onto a shelf?

I hear many things about racks, glass shelving units, weight limits and the like.

I intend to place mine on a wooden, wall mounted shelf.

Is this outrageous?

It's not outrageous, but it does mean you won't be getting the best out of it. Racks are designed specifically to minimise the vibrations reaching your sensitive hi-fi equipment and therefore get the best sound, whereas a shelf will not do this. If you've spent a reasonable amount on your setup, it's best to spend a bit more and get a reasonable rack. However, it is your decision!

It makes no difference to sound quality where you put them, so your shelf is just fine.

Oh crikey, here we go again! First time I've ever heard someone say that vibrations can't affect equipment though, especially when a CD player is involved!!

A good wooden shelf fixed to a brick wall will be immune to vibrations, so no problem. My turntable is playing happily on one as I type.

One how do you know it is fixed to a brick wall and two, that's rubbish...

Immune to vibrations? Wow, that's an impressive shelf you have there...

NB - it's worth noting, I didn't say it would sound terrible, I just said it wouldn't be at its best. It depends whether you want to get the best out of your equipment or not. Knowing your views on a lot of products which help you do this, it doesn't surprise me that you're not particularly bothered about this, so I'm sure a shelf is fine for you.

Personally, I think as long as the shelf is quite sturdy it should be fine. I have used specialist racks (and still do) but could I say I noticed a difference?.....not really!

Don't get me wrong, I fully understand why they are used but will there be a massive difference? I doubt it. So if the shelf is what you want to use it should fine.

Just trust your ears. If it sounds fine on the shelf then enjoy your music

OK, perhaps I should have said if you live in a shed don't use a shelf. I assumed a brick built house.
