Seeing as you've gone down the Audiolab road, why not plump for the Audiolab 8000PPA phono preamp? Synergy and all that.

Seems to fit the bill and under your budget.

I followed advise on this forum and bought a Trichord Dino phono amp, and Power supply from fleebay. Haven't looked back. Superb sound and has made me buy loads of vinyl now.

(MM and MC and lots of things to adjust if you really want to)

ps. I think Michell designed the Trichord Dino.

Seeing as you have gone down the Audiolab road, you could consider the matching Audiolab 8000PPA phono amp, which fits the bill for you (currently £480 from Superfi).

Either Project Tube Box SE II or the Phono Box SE II come to mind, both are superb for the money. I'd try a home demo of a phono stage before you buy one

My advise would be to look at the Tom Evans Audio Microgroove which, in my opinion, is miles better than the Trichord Dino. I have used both before. The Microgroove can be set to work with any cartridge and can be found hers:- http://www.audioelevation.co.uk/CartV3/Details_options.asp?ProductID=311
