Hi folks,

I looked for an FAQ or "best buy" section so apologies I couldn't find it, but which DVD player should I go for sub £150 (preferably sub £100) that will do DVD upscaling to 720p through HDMI? I've seen the Samsung HD870 mentioned in several places and from reading on the web the Denon DVD-1730 (1740?) is also highly rated.

Is there a link to a "best buy" section by the way? Although this particular player is for my sister (I'm her personal shopper for all things electrical!) I'm getting bitten by the bug myself and would like to invest in a home AV system at some point also with the intention to go for quality low-mid range typically.

I'm completely at your mercy, throw me a shortlist along with recommendations and I'll do a bit more reading! Let the slippery decent begin (I know where this will all lead!) :)

Best regards,

Chris

You cannot go wrong with the Toshiba SD-370E an absolutely top piece of budget kit for just £60!!!!!!!!!!!

All on here will agree.

I'll leave the rest of your question for those on here who know better.

The Denon DVD-1730 was not highly rated by What HiFi? It only received a 3 star rating.

The Pioneer DV-696AV was given 4 Stars and is in your price range. You should be able to get it even cheaper now that it is an older model.

Without wanting to make your decision tougher, have you considered the sony dvp-ns76h? I just picked one up for £65 and am well impressed. Its never been reviewed by What Hifi as far as I know, but its a great player. There is also a new version out (ns78h), but it comes in at about £90-100
