Hello all, Its certainly been a while since i posted but i'm always lurking. Anyway i'm redecorating my quite small living room and i'm looking at getting a new surround sound set up. Well i'm actually getting a whole new system. I'm replacing my old Onkyo 605 Amp and Jamo A102 speakers. I've already decided on the Q Acoustic Q-AV system. (very wife friendly and seems to do a great job at being invisible) I'm just torn between which amp to pair it with. So i'd like to get the opinions of you guys and see what you think would be the best. I'm torn between: Sony STR-DH810 Onkyo TX-SR508 Which would be better paired with the Q-AV System? Or should i stump up the extra cash and pick up the TX-SR608? The amp needs to be 3D ready because i'm getting a new TV too. (either 42VT20 or 46VT20 not worked it all out yet) Any advice is certainly welcome.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm swaying towards the Sony TBH as i will have a PS3 slim attached. So hopefully the bravia link will turn that on fine. I'll be using a Harmony remote so the remote really isnt an issue. Plus the missus likes the Sony for some reason. (I still havent ruled out the Onkyo tho)

Will the Sony be ok with the Q-AV? I'm not too technically minded when it comes to these things. So was wondering if i'll get the best out of the speakers with that amp?

My budget is £400 max but the more i save the more i can put towards the tv.

Which brings me to a question to you FrankHarveyHiFi.

Was thinking of picking up one of the new Panasonic 3D plasma's and i'm quite tempted with your deal for the Blu Ray player (BDT100) and 42VT20 or 46VT20 (still undecided on what size to get)

Whats your opinion on the new Panasonic TV range? Paired wit the Panasonic BDT100 3D Blu Ray?

Also stock levels if possible?

Last one. Any chance of the combo deal you have on which ends Fri getting extended? Or is there a better deal just around the corner? ;-)

Hi,

Can't speak exactly for the Sony SDR -810. I own a Sony STR-DN1000 which is the 800 series with a few extras. Find the sound very hard. Having heard the Q-AV i would definetly recommend a warmer amp. Yamaha should be great or new Onkyo based on reviews. Just be sure to try out the Sony before you buy if its only 80% as hard as mine i wouldn't recommend. Also, Sony sound is very precise between speakers but doesn't create a 'fuller' soundstage that others can achieve. Thinking about the missus the Yamaha's do tend to look better than the Sony too.

Good Luck

Thanks Cookie Monster.

I'll not be able to crank the volume right up so the best sound at decent volumes is a priority. And my current Onkyo seems to do that quite well. So i may have to put my foot down and get the Onkyo then. The Yamaha's although decent looking amps are just that bit longer depth wise than i'd like. I know its only a few centimetres but the amp will be going in a cabinet which will only have about 38cm depth anyway. So the shorter depth the better.

Would the 508 handle the speakers well or would i be better going for the 578? Or even the 608? Or will the 508 be sufficient?

I would definetly not replace your Onkyo with any of the amps mentioned. They are all of the same quality of your current Onkyo or even less so you would be taking step backards. I would save that money to get better speaker package and only change your amp when you really do an upgrade. You can still get the 3D by pluging your HDMI directly to the TV. Regarding sound, my opinion is that a normal DTS soundtrack in a medium/high-end system will still sound better than an HD sound in a budget system. Is the same as MP3 and CDs, an MP3 format in medium/high-end systems will sound better than a CD in a low budget system. This would be my preference anyway.

I'm set on the speaker system. Thats not going to change.

I think i'm just going to go for the 508. Unless anyone thinks i would be better off with the 578 or even the 608?

It's probably worth looking at the Denons, too. The 1910 goes brilliantly with the Q-AV.

dont see how the Q- av is a upgrade or even a step up for the jamo's. as for the amp..going for a similar amp makes no sense.well a different amp cant get you a better sound, but the speakers wont really.and the jamos can pretty well disapear neetly tucked below the tv

The Jamos are around £200, and the Q-AV system around £600. I would think it is an upgrade.

I need a new amp as there isn't enough HDMI ports for my kit on the current amp. I'm getting a 3d blu ray aswell as a 3d tv so having 3d passthrough with then just a single wire to the tv is exactly what I'm after. Surely I'm not going to be worse off picking up one of the new onkyo, Am I?

With regards to the speakers, I've chosen them as the rears will go perfect in the ceiling keeping them nice and hidden blending in with the White Walls. And the 3 speaker soundbar solution for the front is also perfect too. Will fit neatly under my new wallmounted tv. I'd much rather that than 5 black boxes scattered around the living room. And more importantly so does the bank manager (the wife). I know the speakers are small but so is my living room. Just want speakers that are hidden as much as possible.

Are the Q-AV's really a downgrade on the Jamo's?

well 3 speakers at front , the jamos are pretty small.the rears of the Q-av sure are more "flat" and easy to hide.but for sound quality it wount be a step up I think. the newer amp of course is better at sound , movie and stereo wise.

Well i went for the Boston Acoustics Soundware 5.1 system in the end.

Couldnt get a hold of the Q-AV system anywhere.

So i've now got the following waiting to get put up as soon as i finish decorating the living room.

Panasonic 42VT20 3D TV
Onkyo 508 Amp
Boston Soundware 5.1 (using QED micro speaker cable)
Panasonic DMP100 3D Blu Ray player

Can't wait to get it all set up to start watching some 3D and a bit of 3D gaming too.

Thanks for all your input.Much appreciated.
