Which 1080p Upscaler to Buy (below £100) And BluRay-HDDVD question?

Due to the format war im not going to risk spending a large amount on something that may die, also im happy to wait for the price to come down. I have got the Sony KDL40W2000 so would I actually see any difference between an upscaler and a BluRay/HDDVD due to the fact that I have now discovered this TV does not support 24fps.

Am considering these Upscalers and am unable to find much in the way of 1080p upscaler reviews all help appreciated in the best of them. I would also like to connect to my denon AVR-1507 amp so audio out is necessary and also descent sound formats (dolby 5.1/digital, dts etc) if possible at this price.

Hi Jamie,

Sorry, missed this post first-time around.

We haven't tested all the models you mention. The Philips got four stars when we tested it in our November issue - it's a good player, but there are some issues with fast motion.

If you could stretch your budget a little (to £130), you could buy the Denon DVD-1740, which is an excellent 1080p upscaler and would be the perfect partner for your receiver - you'd even be able to use just one remote control, I believe.

If you can't stretch to that, consider the Samsung HD870 - it 'only' upscales to 1080i, but offers a fantastic picture for the money (@£60). It's our budget-player favourite, beating the Philips and the Toshiba SD-370E for performance.

I've just bought a Panasonic PX70, 37" - as this is not 1080 resolution (720, I think?) , then does that mean the Samsung HD870 that scales to 1080i is more than enough for my needs?

And any advice on HDMI cables?? Thanks, and sorry for thr threadjacl

Hi all. I've been reading thru the forum for some weeks now as I've been in the market for a new plasma having just sold my Toshiba 42 rear proction set.

I've finally plumped for the Panasonic 42PZ85 (which I got for an astounding price from John Lewis - thanks to this forum!!!).

I am now in the market for an upscaling dvd player whilst I bide my time on the Blu Ray front and found this thread.

I know the Denon 1740 is meant to be a good bet but does anyone have any thoughts on the Panasonic DVD S53. Both of these are available in Richer Sounds for £80.00 at the moment.

Also would I really benefit from using an HDMI lead with either of these for watching standard def dvd's or would I be better off using my existing component leads or Vivanco Pro wire scarts?

I have the Sony player you mentioned, linked to a smaller Bravia and it's great. 1080p and I got it for £49.99 deilvered from Amazon just after Christmas - amazing they have gone up in price! However, I also use the Denon 1940 on my main system and it's fantastic. My brother-in-law saw it and bought the cheaper 1740 and it is great too. And here you can get it for £100 delivered in either colour!!

I'm pretty sure I'll be goind for the Denon 1740 but just wondered if anyone had any experience or comments regarding the Panasonic DV 53?
