I am confused by adds for SONY Blu-Ray players, for example:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/MULTIREGION-BDP-S5200-BDPS5200-Blu-Ray-Region-Black/dp/B00KY51LK4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1425423398&sr=8-3&keywords=sony+bdp+s5200+region

Typical ad .. states 'multi region' player, yet in the following sect states "Blu-ray players and DVD players sold by Amazon.co.uk play UK (Region Two) Blu-ray discs and DVDs only"

Are Sony players muli region or not ? or is this some get-out clause by Amazon.

Or is there some hack that has to be applied to make them multi region ... seen some hacks that require a one-time input of codes on remote.

..... whereas Blu-Rays are not.

Not true at all. DVDs are region coded whereas many / most blu Rays are multi region. Which are multi region and which are locked can be checked on sites such as blu-ray.com.

Players require a hardware mod to play blu rays from other regions. Most players do not come with this mod unless you buy from a specialist site. Players require a software mod to play DVDs from other regions. If the listing is not clear on this point you should enquire with the seller. Beware that U.S. DVDs may play in NTSC rather than PAL format.

Most Blu-Ray players are multi-region today, you just have to check to see. Any problems make sure you can send it back like Amazon for example.

No, actually, most blu ray discs are multizone. Players are region locked for blu rays. This is a compulsory requirement as per BDA. They may be multiregion for DVDs but you should confirm before purchase.
Thats what I was trying to say.

If you read down the Q&A on Amazon you would have found out the answer. He is asking about one specific model, not generally. Nobody likes a smartarse, especially when you are wrong!

I'm not sure what you mean. You said "DVDs are multiregion whereas blu rays are not", which is not true at all.

Edit: Ah, now I get it. You mean the player playing the discs, not discs themselves.

Ok, so you meant something different from what you actually said. Clarity is key. Nothing I said was wrong, unless you can point out otherwise.

I've not tried out much Blu-ray players but my 1-year old Samsung SE-506BB works smoothly so far. Got a French BD a while ago and Samsung reads it well.

Blu ray region B / 2 covers all of Europe (and Africa, the Middle East and Australasia) so it would be pretty bizarre if you couldn't play a French blu ray on a UK player!

Check the Amazon ad again, it may be like this one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/BDP-S7200-Blu-Ray-MULTIREGION-High-Resolution-Upscaler-Black/dp/B00KY5O75A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426773401&sr=8-1&keywords=sony+bdp+s7200+region

Like your example the ad .. states 'multi region[/b]' player, yet in the following sect states "Blu-ray players and DVD players sold by Amazon.co.uk play UK (Region Two) Blu-ray discs and DVDs only"[/b]

but it's Dispatched from and sold by magicdiscounts, therefore not sold by Amazon.co.uk

Hope this helps
