So, the saga of the cassette deck - such a pity but this needs to get returned.
The seller had done some excellent work on stripping the deck down, cleaning and refurbishing it and putting it all back together again. Unfortunately, they failed to mention the stale tobacco smoke odour that clearly lingered from a previous owner. Ebay rules don't stipulate that this is mentioned, but I think they do need to do something around best practice. It's always appreciated when sellers mention this in a listing and buyers are then in an informed position.
The original listing was very detailed, loads of photos and a good summary of the refurbishment to go with it. So, I ordered it. He'd literally taken it apart and reassembled it.
I raised the matter with the seller who didn't take it too well - he didn't smoke, nor did his family, it's been in a box for years, he couldn't detect it, I should've asked - (he has a point here, but only so far - I was busy, his listing was very detailed and it's not my listing, so I'm not copping for that) - today it was "perhaps it was the courier". I might live near to Glasgow, but I didn't come up the Clyde in a crisp packet.
So, today, there was a partial refund offer of £10 and a lengthy story around his health issues (which I fully accept, but at the same time, he's well enough to refurbish and resell audio gear of which he's claimed to have sold around 20 since the turn of the year, so it's like I understand, but y'know...). Needless to say, the £10 offer was rejected in a second. That's just an insult. A return slip was sent and I'll send it back next week.
And it's massively disappointing because the work done and the deck performance is astonishingly good. I'd have been happy to have kept this but for the stale smoke odour - I'm a non-smoker and always have been. And I think sellers have a responsibility, regardless of Ebay rules and take ownership of their listings. The good ones do and I hope this seller mentions this in his future listings.
