I'm really not interested much in how things measure. I'd rather trust my ears. Valve Amps measure badly too, but can sound sublime.

Happy Friday/Divali/Halloween 🕯️

Fitted my first ever MC cartridge this morning. I discovered the Hana SL needs 400 Ohms resistance, which my pre can’t do. I’m likely to replace my TT this year, so all made sense to look at eBay for used carts. This Hana ML with 350 hours was too good a price to turn down.

I had no idea what to expect, and it might surprise none of you that it’s put a massive smile on my face. I think I’m hearing more realism in acoustic instruments; the strums, hits & plucks seem more audible, there is greater separation & a more cohesive sound floating in the centre.

A nice surprise is that treble seems much sharper without being harsh & the cartridge is v quiet. It’s far more forgiving on noisier records, something I was worried an MC would exasperate. No reason to fear, it’s brilliant.

Clearance is a bit of a worry. With the arm rest up, I’ve got about 2mm clearance on the outside of a record & nothing in the centre. I have to manually lift the arm to clear the vinyl when replacing it. Warped records might be an issue. Will see how I go 🙂

I think to really capture the real strengths of that vinyl analogue loveliness, you need to get yourself a nice MC tube preamp. 😊

I am tempted to replace my old Arcam IrDac and Blue sound Node with a Eversolo DMP A8 but there is no way to Audition one so probably won't happen even though it gets glowing reviews from every review I have seen. Cheers Kev.

If you live in the UK, there are quite a number of Eversolo dealerships, I suspect some may have listening lounge - if it's near you give them a call. If it's in your budget, Eversolo has just released the A10, which judging by some of the reviews surpasses even the A8.

Having moved house in spring to a rather dull-looking mid-20th-century place (which is in need of lots of refurb), I've decided to go all-in on a 1970s-lookalike hi-fi system.

The next piece will be a refurbed 1970s-design Technics SL-1200 turntable.

I think they look rather lovely, and if I can get one like the example above, it'll fit in nicely with my 1970s Yamaha amp.
