A little bit of Hall & Oates, Bigger Than Both Of Us.

I've always filed my vinyl/cd's in alphabetical order, something to with my CDO (thats like OCD but in alphabetical order, as it should be!)

I do wish you two would file your records, I'm frustrated for you. I love order. I've refiled my records two times in the last year alone.

Unfortunately, order in my record collection, like socialism in the Labour Party, are but optimistic outcomes.

And the chances of you going straight to the record you're looking for are about as good as Ed Milliband leading the Labour Party to an election victory, but you have it within your hands to change one of those Charlie.

I had a bit of a dark moment again yesterday, when I realised I'd got rid of all my And Also The Trees records. I don't want to play them, they belong to bygone time, but I was gutted when I realised I'd done it, and that I'd done it under pressure from my wife. It will not happen again.

Hi BBB,

I fear you might be right about Mr.Milliband's Prime Ministerial chances. And mine in the minimal time vinyl hunting.

That feeling you describe of records you have sold and regret doing is a terrible one. Only done it a handful of times myself but it still bites.

Back to the music, have you got Tappa Zukie In Dub? If so, what's it like??

It's a great album, but my vinyl copy is poor. There's a Blood & Fire reissue, which is more and likely the one to go for if The Congos reissue is any kind of marker.

Thanks fo rthe info, BBB.

I saw it today but I got distracted by Mr. Record Shop owner letting me have the first browse through 500 newly acquired used LPs. I'm going back in tomorrow, so I'll take a closer look. It was about £13, I think.

He also had a mini-stash of other great looking dub albums, some familiar names (Keith Hudson, Augustus Pablo, Lee Perry) some less so. I'm tempted by a few of them.

And in a moment of serendipity, he's also got a copy of the Scritti Polliti LP I can't find. No, those two things aren't connected. Of course, if I buy it, mine will immediately present itself from it's loft confinement.

About to play:

Crossroads Box - Eric Clapton

The Yardbirds, John Mayall and Cream sides, I think.

Dear sir

I'm writing to complain about the way in which this forum has been hijacked by goddamn Commie agitators who want to see a return to the days when the Labour Party represented the views of the working man and spewed its dreadful socialist propaganda via The Daily Mirror.

Sir, this man is also a teacher; is he planting the seeds of revolution in the minds of the poor and needy children he teaches? A man, sir, who by his own admission, cannot find his own records in his own house.

This anarchic individual must be thwarted forthwith and stopped too.

Yours etc

Sir Nigel Bufton-Tufton.

That's a very good price for the B&F reissue.

I had that spam business, Charlie: I think I kept logging on and off until it allowed me to post...very annoying though. Good luck!

Bill Evans: 'You're Gonna Hear From Me'. Highly-recommended Bill with Eddie Gomez on brilliant bass.

John Fahey: 'Death Chants, Breakdowns & Military Waltzes'.

Dexter Gordon: 'Go'.

Yusef Lateef: 'Eastern Sounds'. A real treasure.

Tim Buckley: 'Goodbye And Hello'. Mono.

Country Joe And The Fish: 'I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die'.

Dear Nigel,

I wholeheartedly agree with your most apposite skewering of that patent buffoon Charlie "Red Dog" Jefferson. His kind are distinctly not one of us, old chap. I agree with your Septic Isle Indepedence Party rhetoric and whatismore I would like to be your Deputy. Together we shall scour the nation for such militant pinko-jibberish. Relativism? Pah. We need absolutes to rule this land.

Yours,

Charles Burlington-Smythe

Septic Isle Independence Party!!! How I laughed...and I'm still laughing! Oh Charlie, I fear if you and I were in charge of a political party there's not a lot that would get done, bar listening to records and drinking copious pints of beer and, do you know, that's really all I've ever wanted to do. So thats rock 'n' roll and drugs sorted out...I can't help feeling that there's something missing.

On a more serious note, I'm currently flying the flag for decency on a thread in the hi-fi forum about the value of your house and hi-fi in relative terms. I was a bit irked about the nature of such questions and I vented my spleen. I can be very po-faced when I choose to be that way out and sometimes I look at my posts and think, 'Did I write that?' I've just brought up the increasing gap between rich and poor in the thread which I've been tyring to get in for ages! I saw the opportunity and I spouted my 'militant pinko-jibberish.' Not that anbybody gives a sh**, of course.

Thanks for your reply which tickled me in all the right places. Good stuff!

Regards.

Hi Jim,

Yes I share your concerns about our putative leadership skills. I think back-room (of a pub) socialism is where our "talents" lie.

I admired your polemic on the other thread. To borrow from Oscar, some seem to know the price of everything and the true value of nothing. Okay, I'll get off my taller-than-the-average sized horse now.

Music:

Brothers & Sisters - Allman Brothers

Blue Train - John Coltrane

EC Was Here - Eric Clapton

Song For My Father - Horace Silver

Songs To Remember - Scritti Politti

Slates EP - The Fall

The Return Of Django - The Upsetters

Have One On Me - Joanna Newsom

Crooked Mile - Microdisney

Lord Offaly - David McWilliams

Snap - The Jam

Rainbow Concert - Eric Clapton & Friends

Finally Jim, have you got or heard the latest Coltrane re-issue, Offering? The vinyl price is off-putting but the reviews are alluring.

I'll start at the end, if I may. Well, I haven't heard 'Offering' but I've got a few bootlegs of the last few performances, well, from the last year of his life with this band, featuring Pharoah and Rashid Ali and I have to say it's pretty hair-raising stuff. Intense and a bit draining to listen to, but that was, of course, his intention, I think...he didn't do small talk, if you like! It'll be interesting; I'd Spotify or youtube it first to see if it's your cup of tea, bearing in mind the price. If pushed, I'd say I understand what he was doing and respect him as a musician, and as a musician who ws probably bored with producing music of great beauty that wasn't challenging enough for him: he needed to do stuff like this; you can hear him almost breaking free from the restraints of the quartet in 1965...he wanted to be more 'out there' and he was such a talented musician who could blame him. Probably 'more out there' is wrong; he wanted a more direct form of expression, working with like-minded musicians who freed him from chord structures and the beat; the problem withis, and this is only my opinion, is that it does become self-indulgent and loses some of the beauty of more concise and more conventionally harmonically strucuted pieces. It has its own terrible beauty though, there's no doubt about that.

Very jealous to see 'Song For My Father' on your excellent playlist.

Just been to check...my daughter has a beautiful boxed edition of 'Have One On Me' in her bedroom. I must play it; it always sonds rather lovely when she listens to it although her voice is a tad difficult at times. She's a huge fan of Ms Newsom.

Funny, readng 'Record Collector' and their feature re The Jam's 'Setting Sons' I brought down 'Setting Sons', 'Extras' and 'Snap' from the loft. What a great band they were. He's done some interesting and pleasant stuff since then, but never equalled the fire and anger of those Jam records.

I love Microdisney by the way and 'Brothers And Sisters'; 'Allman Brothers Live At Fillmore East' is an old favourite...fond memories of listening to it in the sixth form with bottles of Newcastle Brown and erm other things too!

Haven't played EC's Rainbow Concert for years although I did play his first solo album, 'Eric Clapton' the other night and loved it.

I have probably written too much. Sorry. I'm retired, you know! I have little else to do!

Rolling Stones - Goats Head Soup

Oh a great record! Maybe even their last great record. Yep, I think so.

Edit: Well, maybe 'Some Girls'. Forgot about that one.

I've only got a few Stones albums, Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock n' Roll, and Some Girls, and 4 collections too.

That's the first time I've ever played it actually, and first impressions are that it was a bit hit and miss, though most albums are like that on first listening I suppose.

I'm currently playing the Arcade collection Get Stoned, which despite the number of tracks on each side, sounds quite good.
