Sometime in the future I hope to get a Technics 1200 turntable. Browsing on ebay I noticed that there is also a Technics 1210 as well.

Also there seem to be variations referred tp as Mark 1 , Mark 2 etc.

I would be very grateful if someone could let me know how many variations there are of this turntable and the main differences between them.

Finally, if its possible, what would be a fair price to pay for one of these in excellent condition.

THank you and best wishes.

Lots! As usual, wikipedia is your friend

But if you're buying one, I'd look for one someone has used as a home deck, rather than professionally, as the latter could well be much abused. The Technics decks are strong, but many have led a hard life.

SL1200 is silver

SL1210 is black

If you can find a mint one then go for it - they are a bombproof TT, that is why they had a cult following by DJ's They were not aimed at DJs, but because they were solid, had pitch control which suited their needs - also they sound good.

I used to have a SL1200 silver, loved it.

BTW dont forget an I/C

I have owned a few of these in my time. Essentially an excellent turntable. The Mk2 has a heavier platter, quartz locking and a slightly tweaked tonearm. Careful buying second hand though as although allegedly bomb proof I have seen some sorry looking ones that have been hammered by DJ’s taking them to parties.

You can upgrade the tonearm (recommended for hi-fi application) and they deserve a much bigger power supply. An excellent turntable and something I would like to own again (preferably two!)

I did the same thing with a pair of 1200s, about the same time ago and under the same cr*ppy circumstances. Back then you could always guarantee yourself 500 quid for your decks. I lost count of how many I've owned but now have none and just the remenants of a record collection.

i posted a thread yesterday on the main hifi forum about replacing my 1200mk11 and in the end after a ong long think decided to keep it. the build quality is stupendous and would say even in its original form would stand its own as domestic tt
