I'm sure someone at the www.cyrusunofficial.co.uk forum will know the answer to this.

I think I've got your answer; the What Hi-Fi review in my August 98 buying guide states "3mm sockets limit cable choice." It looks like they were sockets unique to Cyrus and the plugs were supplied with the amp. It was a pre-BFA attempt to get past the Euro anti-banana plug legislation.

I believe that Cyrus used to sell them for £12 a set of four

Why would there have been a euro anti banana plug leglisation, are they dangerous or offenive?

You're welcome,

I believe the problem was that 4mm Banana plugs fit some European plug sockets allowing European kids to electrocute themselves. This resulted in the threat of a ban on 4mm Banana plugs. Cyrus responded with 3mm plugs. Then the British Federation of Audio (largely Arcam, Cyrus and Linn), adopted the Camcon/BFA plug, which if I understand my Linn kit correctly is basically a hollow 4mm banana plug in a sleeve that prevents it fitting a power socket.

Good luck with the plugs, hope that it finally solves the problem. If it does; can you post the name of the plug type omn here in case anyone else gets the same problem.

surely the speaker end if fitted with a banana plug would still be a risk and what about all the makes that haven't adopted the camcon/bfa

I've recently bought a Cyrus III from ebay and it seems to accept a larger banana plug than my dad's amp, which is the very same model, but presumably of a different year.

I take it I'll need the 4mm plug?

I guess you'll all have sold your Cyruses by now, but if not ...

Mrs Butcher I guess will need MFA plugs.

Those of you lumbered with 3mm speaker sockets, best solution might be to replace them with the 4mm equivalents, available from Farnell for under £2 each.

These are Deltron parts, just like the originals. Don't get the cheaper suffix -01 variants, they're tin-plated.

The Cyrus comes apart pretty easily and changing the sockets is a straightforward affair.

Good advice but probably wasted on here. Most people on here baulk at even taking the lid off and spraying the switches and pots with switch-cleaner. Hey the other day we even had a guy say that he was thinking of connecting two sets of speakers to his amp, one to the A outputs and one to the B outputs, but he was scared and did anyone have experience of doing something so radical. That's the level of daring adventure you're at round here. (With my cap duly doffed to the precious few of us left on here who don't mind popping lids and firing-up the soldering-iron).

:)

No offence intended to anyone but this forum isn't exactly known for people rolling-up their sleeves, cracking-out the soldering-iron and taking-on a bit of HiFi DIY. For example I once suggested to someone that they solder-up their own custom jack-to-phono cable and it was like "you want me to do WHAT?? Are you CRAZY??"

So I was just kind of sayin'...
