i'm saving the £'s up to buy a AVA RS3 Ripping NAS which i also hope to be playing through a pair of grado GS1000's. basically my question is apart from obviously my laptop and a good broadband connection, what else will i need to complete my system set-up? my plan is to download hi-res music files from the likes of Linn and the Bowers and wilkins music club as well as listening to my cd collection through the Linn DS, but which one would best suit my needs? it would be great if WHF could maybe publish an idiot's guide to computer based music

also would i need a headphone amp to connect the grado's to the Linn DS?.

Lots - the Sneaky has modest built in amps but no interface (you need a wifi controller like iPhone, PDA, wifi Phone etc), the Majik has a display but no amps (though it does have a preamp, so you need only add power). You;d need a head amp for both.

As for quality difference, dunno.

A good place to go to is the Linn Forums, they have dedicated DS forums.

I often visited due to my curiosity of DS, and by all accounts both sound great.

The Sneaky also has a 20w power amp, so used as such you just add speakers, however the best is to disable both its pre and power amps (through Linn's software) and use your own amplification.

And remember to budget for upgraded network components (a good router, switch etc), a NAS and an iPod Touch (seems to be the best bet for control of the DS).

It's not a cheap solution, although the Sneaky is decently priced by Linn's standards.

I'd say that they probably wouldn't be disgrase by it.

i had some 601's on the end of a unidisc sc at one point and they sounded great so would imagine you'll find the same.

not saying they couldnt be bettered though

In quality terms, yes they'd be fine, though that 20w rating of the sneaky concerns me a little bit, not sure how it would deal with the 685s - advice as always is to Listen Before Purchasing.
