Hi

I have recently ripped all my cd's in lossless flac using dbpoweramp, they are stored on a NAS (Synoligy ds211+) accessed by a Boxeebox (wired) and fed into my Amp (Denon AVC A1HD) via HDMI.

I am disappointed by the sound, in comparison to cd's played through my Denon transport (BT2500). So I guess my question is what would you recommend I add/change on my system? I had originally thought buying a separate dac may help, however the dac in the amp works fine with digital feeds from the transport. I am assuming the boxeebox is the weak link? Am seriously considering the new Denon transport as this can access my NAS. Good idea?

Any ideas greatfully accepted

Thanks

Steve

This sounds like it might be a settings issue. Try first connecting to your AVR with an optical digital cable and see if there are any changes, if you use the same connection as the Denon transport, this would help pinpoint any problems.

Also check the settings on the AVR and the Boxee to make sure that both units are setup for HDMI properly.

Ensure any EQ is switched off on the Boxee and also on the HDMI input on the AVR.

Just some things to try before you do anything drastic.

Hi Overdose,

Thanks i will check my settings later and get back to you. As for the connections both the transport and boxee are connected to the amp via hdmi (both the same make and length chord active). When you say "Also check the settings on the AVR and the Boxee to make sure that both units are setup for HDMI properly" other than the eq settings what should i be looking for?

Regards

steve

The AVR, I'm not sure about, that'll need a trawl through the manaual, the Boxee software will have audio output settings somewhere in the menus.

Just have a play around, you could also try some other forums, perhaps Boxee specific for this question also. There really should be no differences between the two digital feeds, particularly with lossless rips.

Tried looking everywhere in settings on both boxee & amp nothing that makes any difference. I have not yet tried the optical link but still cant understand why a pcm feed from a lossless flac file could be worse than a cd played on a transport outputting pcm?

That's why I think that something is wrong somewhere. You could try swapping the HDMI cables over, or just the inputs at the amp.

Overdose,

Yes i tried that as you said, i swapped the hdmi from the transport to the boxee and used the same input on the amp as the transport was in. Still seems to be authority missing from the bass. Maybe this is just a placebo effect!!!

Well, there are either differences or not.

The best thing might be to determine if they actually exist and then go from there.

I'm sorry, but I cannot be of much more help here.

There are differences. Just me being cautious as people seem to take offence when I suggest a streamed lossless file does not sound (I.m.h.o) as good as the cd it was ripped from. The guy in Frank Harvey almost physically kicked me out of his shop for suggesting such a ludicrous idea!!! Apparently no one on earth has ever said they sound worse, in fact everyone says it sounds better. Now I would also like to point out I know the source material is in theory identical so I assumed cd and lossless ripped cd would sound the same. I just can't figure out why in my system there is a noticeable drop in base through all types of music.

Hi,

I hadn't thought about the files being the issue. I use dbpoweramp as i understand it checks each rip bit for bit against an online database and it tells you if it is a succesful rip or not. I could try new software, what do you use for your rips and what was the software that caused you issues? fyi I rip lossless flac

Yes i have set it to check with accuripp verify which as i understand it checks bit for bit against a online database of other rips and returns a match for each one you are identical to (majority of rips are identical to 50 or more so i assume this is good). If it fails on part of a rip it will then re rip as many times as you have set it too until it gets a satisfactory result or it tells you the rip has failed.

Well, not directly, that would take forever, what it does is generate a checksum from the rip and compares that to checksums from other people's rips, two identical rips will generate the same checksum. It's the same difference though, in the end.
