Hello all,

Just after your opinions on the virtues of buying an 09 touch or waiting for the 2010 version to arrive? I've read that the new touch will come with a camera and video but neither really seem to me as being essential to have on your ipod so i'm wondering if i should just go ahead and buy the current version? Any thoughts much appreciated, thank you.

It could be as soon as Sept 1 that you can know for sure what will be relesed.

I think it is worth holding until then. back camera and video is not interesting to me as well, but a front camera (for video calls over internet), a faster processor (for internet browsing and apps), a better screen and - most importanly - larger capacity (for lossless files) - I think are all worth it.

Yes, we have an official invite to a big Apple launch on Sept 1st, so it's probably worth waiting until then (it's only next week!) to see if they announce a new Touch.

Many thanks Andy for the info! I will be waiting for an announcement from Apple then as it's only next week, would i be right in presuming that WHF will tell all on the site as soon as you can? That would be very helpful in making my mind up!

Best regards

Yes, we'll be reporting live from the event (at least one of my colleagues will, most of us are in Berlin for the IFA consumer electronics show).

Yep - we've got a very busy news week coming up on Whathifi.com. As well as the Apple announcement, as Andy says it's' the huge IFA show in Berlin, where there'll be product launches from Samsung, LG, Sony, Toshiba, Philips, Panasonic, Loewe, Sharp and many more!

As far as technology allows, we'll be reporting live from all the events, via our Twitter feed and breaking news here - plus picture blogs etc to follow as the week unfolds. News from Wednesday onwards....

AlmaataKZ,

I didn't know about the front facing camera...that is more interest to me! Faster processor, better screen and a larger capacity would be brilliant and i will be waiting to hear if it's all true before i buy a touch (it's just rumour after all although i've seen pics of the case) but you are right, those sort of upgrades would be worth waiting for!!

Many thanks for the reply

and then a nice set of earphones with control buttons. a guy from a headphone specialist shop recommended me to wait until Christmas when he expects at least some makers of good earphones to release models with full ipod controls adn mics (volume up/down, play/pause, skip fwd/bck)

ooooh now that sounds great! The more i read the more it seems this is more than just your normal update and it seems the touch is vearing more into iphone territory, is that a good thing though??

it is all speculation. in reality I think Apple will dose the nice bits in very slowly. unfrotuantely.

ideal touch for me would be:
- 128 Gb
- retina screen
- longer battery life
- front facing camera (even if no back camera)
- curved back (as now)

I would even like another inch on the screen diagonal, but I do not expect this to happen

Oh yes!! That would be vey, very nice! I can see more storage capacity coming and better battery life but the rest i've just got my fingers crossed for...i just wish Apple wasn't quite so secretive, roll on Sept 1st

To hell with all of it, except the bigger capacity, I'd give up everything for better sound. I have an iPod Touch 64gb and its sound is not all that *great* - even with my CX300s.

In fact I'm hoping Apple would release a stripped out Touch - no wifi, apps, camera, zip, nada, just cover flow and call it the new Classic Touch or whatever.

or i-pod pro !!!

- 24/96to192 playback
- 256 Gb
- excellent DAC
- native support for apt-x

Dream on...

Although the new macmini already supports apt-x natively if I am correct, so native apt-x on the 4th gen touch is not entirely impossible...

Great Waiting to hear if (When) a new AppleTV will be avaliable.

I am assuming you are using a decent bitrate, Have you tried bypassing the internal volume and using an external amp - http://community.whathifi.com/forums/t/318302.aspx It helps with the Mediocre sound quality from the touch.

I rip in AIFF, connect to my hifi through Arcam rDock.

A headphone amp won't really help, as I suspect the iPod's internal DAC is poop, so iPod + expensive amp = expensive poop.

The touch's sound is not *bad* as such but it does lack dynamics, it lacks *punch*.
