Finally I am about to hang my Sony Bravia KDL 46V 3000 on the wall I intend to chase out and sink the leads. From the screen to a cabinet in the corner of the room I am looking at 7.5m per cable. I have just purchased a Sony HTP-BD3IS to replace my Sony BDP S300 and anticipate an upgrade to Sky HD soon. I also connect my laptop and a playstation2/Wii to the screen on occassion. The advice I seek is the number and quality of cables I should choose i.e 2xscart, 2xhdmi, optical? composite? I am unsure as to which other cables I really need to install as I do not wish to have to chase out again (so I am TOLD by the wife).I do not anticipate connecting hi fi audio equipment to the screen. I am happy to temporarily connect to the 3rd hdmi or component sockets on the side if nessessary. I am not an audiophile and I am looking for a mid-range balance of quality over cost (couple of hundred quid ish). Hope this clearly explains my dilema.

Hello Ellistone,

The best performance goes as follows: HDMI, then component, then scart and finally composite.

With regards to your system I would recommend using HDMI for both the Sony HTP-BD3IS and Sky HD. You could connect these to the back panel for permanent connection. You can then use the side HDMI socket for the PS2/Wii when you use them. With regards to the laptop if this has HDMI connectivity then you could also use the side HDMI socket. There is also a "PC IN" connection on the back comprising DVI for video and RCA for audio. If neither of these are an option then use composite along with a pair of analogue interconnects for audio.

Also consider a good quality power cable(s) - at least for your Sony KDL-46V3000 - as this will provide better performance.

I am sure there will be plenty of recommendations of cables from the forum members.

Hope this might help.

All the best,
Darren

Darren, Many thanks for your reply my primary concern is to select a reasonable quality of cables as they are to be sunk into the wall prior to redecoration and I need to be sure that I dont have to repeat the process. Would it be beneficial to install an optical cable? I will use the PC in socket but what difference does it make to use the RCA rear of TV rather than directly into the surround sound system? Is the Sony power lead supplied with the TV so inferior to warrant an upgrade?

Kind regards,

Tom

Hello Tom

If your AV Receiver/processor has HDMI switching then you should connect all components with HDMI outputs into this. Then you should run one HDMI cable from your AV Receiver/processor to your Sony TV. So video processing will then be controlled by the AV Receiver/processor and you will also have audio through your surround sound system with everything connected.

If you want to have the TVs audio output through your surround sound system then you could run an optical cable from the TV to your AV receiver/processor.

With regards to the PC connection if you have a surround sound system then connect the audio line from your laptop directly to that. You can then run a DVI cable to the back of TV for video; or as mentioned before use HDMI if available.

The supplied factory power cable will obviously work in powering your TV. You could however benefit from improved performance with a dedicated power cable. I am sure that forum members will post their experiences.

Hope this helps.

All the best,
Darren
