I want to buy a Quad Classic Integrated amplifier. Unfortunately it does not have a remote and I need one as I am disabled.

Does anyone know of a passive preamp or remote control which would work with the Quad without changing the sound? Icon make one but the the output sensitivity seems to be wrong.

I take it you've examined alternative solutions such as locating the amp closer to where you would be able to directly control it? (This is me making a broadbrush assumption that your disability relates to mobility, not dexterity.)

remote control motorised potentiometer kits available for around £10. I'm sure an electronics engineer could adapt the driven side of such a kit onto your existing volume control without any electrical intrusions. Pity Quad couldn't be bothered do do it in the first place.

I am not totally up to speed on modern-ish Quad amplifiers but if you have the Quad 11 Classic, it has a tape monitor circuit so it would be simple to place a remote contol pre-amp in the 'Tape Loop'.

Something like this should be effectively transparent and do the job.

Thanks for your replies.

I have not managed to solve this problem, but have brought the amplifier anyway - I listened to ten or so amplifiers (including Luxman and MacIntosh) at home with my Quad electrostatics and the Classic Integrated was by far the best. (The source is a Copland CD player.) I also had the Icon unit on loan for a while: it did alter and degrade the sound.

I have also considered positioning the CD player and/or amplifier so that I can get at controls without having to stand up. So far I have not done this either as it would involve laying long (and expensive!) cables under my wooden flooring.

Any further suggestions would be welcome!
