Vocal Volume Problem

My system is a Philips 32PF9986 TV, Pioneer 575A DVD connected to the receiver via the coax and the TV via the component to HDMI, Denon AVR 2105 Receiver, Sky Plus connected to the receiver via the optical and the TV via the RGB scart and Mordaunt Short Genie 5.1 speakers. When playing DVD's (and to a lesser extent on Sky) I am getting a large difference in volume between vocals and all other sounds i.e music, sound effects etc and constantly have to turn the volume up to hear what is been said and then down after being defeaned by the special effects. Is there anything I can do to balance this out ?

alter the level of the centre speaker from the receiver? I know this can be done on mine.
