I have been instucted to find out how to get the vinyl onto CD.

My deck has built in phono so is plugged directly into my Onkyo 606.

Can I use the zone 2 rca out to usb on the laptop??? with one of these

Edit- laptop also has 3.5 micophone input but this is described as monaural input.

What is the best free software to use.

Ta.

You need a dedicated soundcard to do a semi decent job, do you have a desktop PC as well as a laptop? If so something like the M Audio 2496, which is a PCI card, is probably the cheapest card available that will give decent results. Otherwise, if you've only got a laptop you'll need a usb card and you'll need to spend a bit more to get good results.

I use a M-Audio Delta 66 and rip with Soundforge, although that software isn't officially free.

Another alternative would be to get a usb turntable and connect it directly to your laptop. I think you can pick them up for under a £100, although I suspect they're gonna sound terrible.

Thanks for the replies- I have now come to the conclusion that the laptop isnt up to it. I am going to check out the sound card in a spare pc I can put my hands on and try the free software through that.It is for a relatively low key use in the car so I will not be spending bucket loads on it.£7 for a cable as a gamble is worth it.(unless I should be buying a £50 one

NAD PP3 (£75)

http://nadelectronics.com/products/hifi-amplifiers/PP-3-Digital-Phono-Preamplifier

It is a traditional MM/MC phonostage which also includes an Analogue-digital-convertor that you can plug straight into your computer with USB. (16 bit 48khz)

It includes 'Vinyl lite' software.

Project Audio also make a very similar product for about £85...

You can try Audacity software (free) for ripping files from vinyl (or cassette even)...
